DescriptionThis position is responsible for the development and management of custom computer software, databases, and hardware for the Sheriff’s Office, with a primary focus on the Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) ecosystem used by deputies in the field.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesPrincipal functions of this position include installing and maintaining in-vehicle computing hardware, specifically targeting MDTs, high-accuracy GPS modules, barcode scanners, and mobile WAN devices. The specialist will assess departmental mobile technology needs, make related recommendations, and evaluate purchased software for suitability and cost-effectiveness in a field environment. Key responsibilities include diagnosing complex computer hardware and software problems, particularly those involving mobile connectivity, peripheral synchronization, and signal optimization. Additionally, the specialist provides user training and support on equipment, performs routine maintenance of existing hardware, manages the inventory of mobile devices and peripherals, and performs other computer-related and clerical functions as needed.
Minimum Qualifications Position requirements: - U.S. Citizen
- Bachelor's Degree and 2-3 years or more of relevant experience in Computer Troubleshooting, Training, or a related field. Alternatively, candidates may apply if they have acquired equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities through 3-5 years or more of hands-on experience working in the field.
- A South Carolina licensed driver; or the ability to obtain a South Carolina driver’s license
- Candidates must be physically able to lift and carry computers and equipment and must demonstrate proficiency in PC applications using Microsoft 365.
- Honorably discharged from the military (if applicable).
- Have no pending cases or criminal felony convictions (misdemeanors may require expungement).
- No THC or Marijuana use within 365 days; some drugs are automatic disqualifiers.
- No student loans in default status.
- Must pass background checks
Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesCandidates must have a comprehensive knowledge of information systems with specific technical proficiency in troubleshooting mobile-specific hardware issues such as GPS, WAN connectivity, and peripheral COM port mapping. A deep understanding of Mobile Virtual Private Networks (MVPN) as well as experience with Mobile Device Management (MDM) platforms and security patching. This role requires a thorough knowledge of networking, internet protocols, and the ability to manage various hardware and software utilized in a networked mobile environment. Essential abilities include training others in technical information, prioritizing multiple activities to meet time-sensitive deadlines, and identifying solutions to complex technical problems. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively using both technical and nontechnical language, follow written and oral instructions, and work independently to maintain fleet readiness
