    Job Summary

    The Supervising Electrician is responsible for overseeing and performing complex electrical installation, maintenance, and repair work across campus facilities. This role operates with a high level of independence under general supervision, leading multiple crews and coordinating projects to ensure compliance with safety codes and operational standards. The position plays a critical role in maintaining campus infrastructure by managing resources, prioritizing work, and ensuring timely project completion. The incumbent also provides leadership, training, and technical guidance to skilled and semi-skilled staff while supporting operational efficiency and safety.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Plan, prioritize, and coordinate electrical work across multiple crews and projects
    • Assign tasks and provide technical and safety guidance to electricians and support staff
    • Supervise, train, and evaluate staff, including providing input on performance reviews
    • Inspect work in progress and upon completion to ensure compliance with codes, specifications, and safety standards
    • Oversee installation, maintenance, modification, and repair of electrical systems and equipment
    • Develop and maintain work records, reports, and maintenance management systems
    • Collaborate with engineering and design teams to interpret plans and support project execution
    • Prepare cost estimates, material requirements, and project timelines
    • Ensure availability of materials, tools, and equipment to support operations
    • Respond to emergencies and coordinate urgent repairs to prevent damage or safety risks


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to lead, plan, and direct the work of skilled and semi-skilled electrical staff
    • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, construction practices, and safety regulations
    • Ability to interpret complex plans, drawings, and technical specifications
    • Proficiency in estimating labor, materials, time, and project costs
    • Ability to maintain accurate records and use computerized maintenance systems
    • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to respond effectively to emergencies
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills across diverse stakeholders
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing demands
    • Knowledge of supervisory practices, work sequencing, and project coordination
    • Commitment to safety, customer service, and maintaining a productive work environment


    Required Qualifications
    • Must possess those abilities normally acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard electrician’s apprenticeship program
    • Two or more years of experience as a journey-level electrician
    • One to two years in a lead/supervisory capacity are required


    License

    A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

    Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Must possess a more thorough knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques and a working knowledge of job design and work sequencing related to construction projects.
    • Evidence of current certification as an electrician in the State of California
    • Two or more years of experience as a journey-level electrician, including one to two years in a lead/supervisory capacity


    Compensation

    Classification: Supervising Electrician
    Anticipated Hiring Range: $8,959/month - $ 9,321 /month (Step 10 - Step 12)
    CSU Salary Range: $/month - $10,921/month (Step 1 - Step 20)

    The standard background check includes: criminal check, employment and education verification. Depending on the position, a motor vehicle and/or credit check may be required. All background checks are conducted through the university's third party vendor, Accurate Background. Some positions may also require fingerprinting. SJSU will pay all costs associated with this procedure. Evidence of required degree(s) or certification(s) will be required at time of hire.
