    The City of Menlo Park is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated Child Care Teachers to support high-quality early childhood and school-age programs. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic, a passion for working with young children, and the ability to collaborate effectively within a teaching team. Successful candidates will help create a safe, engaging, and nurturing learning environment where children can develop socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively. Responsibilities include assisting with the planning and implementation of developmentally appropriate curriculum, facilitating play-based learning experiences, supervising children, and supporting activities that foster creativity, independence, self-confidence, and positive peer relationships. The ideal candidate brings a positive attitude, flexibility, and a commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for children and families. Candidates should enjoy being actively engaged with children throughout the day and support the City’s high standards for licensed child care programs.

    This position supports multiple City-operated child care programs and may be assigned to work at any of the City’s child care sites based on program needs and scheduling requirements. Our child care programs run year-round, Mondays through Fridays.

    This position is a part-time, hourly, non-benefited classification limited to a maximum of 1,000 hours per fiscal year (or approximately 20 hours a week).

    Ideal Candidate

    The ideal candidate will possess a strong work ethic and a desire to work with preschool and school-age children on class activities and projects; plans age-appropriate curriculum, learning experiences and activities to develop, physical, language, and social skills; and designs activities to enhance the child’s self-esteem and independence.

    Essential Job Functions
    The duties of a Child Care Teacher include, but are not limited to:

    Child Care Teachers plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities for children ages 18 months through 11 years in a licensed child care environment and work collaboratively with a teaching team to create a safe, engaging, play-based learning environment. Duties include providing for the care and supervision of children at all times; supporting children’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development; maintaining a clean and organized classroom; ensuring the health and safety of children; communicating effectively with children, families, and staff; following licensing regulations and City policies; and assisting with daily program routines and indoor and outdoor activities.

    Physical Requirements
    This position requires a high level of physical activity and mobility. Duties include frequent standing, walking, bending, squatting, kneeling, and sitting on the floor while interacting and engaging with children at their level. Staff must actively supervise children indoors and outdoors, participate in classroom and playground activities, and move quickly to respond to children’s needs to ensure their safety. The position also requires lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials and objects, including children, weighing up to 30 pounds.

    Minimum Qualifications

    CHILD CARE TEACHER I
    • Equivalent to high school graduation or GED, plus a minimum of twelve (12) units of course work in Early Childhood Education, recreation, physical education, elementary education, or closely related field. Twenty-four (24) units preferred.
    • An A.A. Degree in early childhood education preferred.
    • Equivalent of six (6) months’ experience in licensed group child care program or comparable setting or possession of a Children’s Center Permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Preparation and Licensing, or equivalent experience to provide the required knowledge and abilities.

    Licenses and Certifications

    CHILD CARE TEACHER I
    • Possession of a valid California driver's license; and a satisfactory driving record, if assigned to the after school program (children in kindergarten - fifth grade).
    • Ability to obtain American Red Cross First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate. Must maintain and renew certification per the American Red Cross guidelines.


    Benefits

    Hourly rate: $32.99 - $40.10 depending on experience.

    These are non-benefited temporary positions. A temporary employee may not work more than 1000 hours per year and will receive sick leave in accordance with State Law.

    Menlo Park was founded November 23, 1927, as a general law city under the State of California and operates under the council-manager form of government. The City Council appoints the City Manager and City Attorney as well as members of a variety of commissions and committees. City departments that report to the City Manager include Administrative Services, the City Manager’s Office, Community Development, Community Services, Library, Police and Public Works.

    In addition to its many attributes, Menlo Park has one of the most beautiful civic center campuses in the Bay Area.     City Council


    The City Council is the City's five-member governing body whose members serve at-large for four-year overlapping terms in general municipal elections. The City Council selects from among its members, the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem to one-year terms at its first meeting in December of each year. The Mayor, who represents the City of Menlo Park, serves as the presiding officer of the City Council and signs enacting ordinances and contracts. The Menlo Park City Council meetings are generally Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at the City Council Chambers located at 701 Laurel Street.
