The PositionThe Health Care Agency - Ambulatory Care is seeking clinical professionals for the role of Medical Assistant I/II Surgical Subspecialty Clinic. This is a clinically focused classification that plays a vital role in the delivery of high-quality patient care within our outpatient clinic providing surgical specialty services, including Otolaryngology (ENT), Urology, Neurosurgery, and Plastic Surgery. Unlike clerical office roles, this position is centered on direct patient interaction, clinical support, and technical medical procedures.
Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will be a proactive, detail-oriented clinical professional who thrives in the fast-paced environment of a surgery focused outpatient clinic supporting outpatient procedures, including preparation of patients, coordination of hospital procedures, and general clinical support of clinicians, including surgeons. Commitment to patient safety, “quality-first” service, clinical proficiency, technical skills, leadership, adaptability, and clear concise communication are also essential skills in a successful candidate.
APPROXIMATE SALARIES Medical Assistant I: $24.70 - $34.58 Hourly
Medical Assistant II: $25.94 - $36.31 Hourly
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVEIncumbents may be eligible for educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification.
BILINGUAL INCENTIVEIncumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.
DEPARTMENT/AGENCY: Health Care Agency - Ambulatory Care
Medical Assistant I/II is an SEIU classification and is eligible for overtime compensation.
The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for the Health Care Agency.
NOTE: If appointed at the lower level, incumbent may be promoted to the higher level without further examination upon meeting the minimum requirements, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and in accordance with the business needs of the department.

CLOSING DATE: 4/3/2026Examples Of DutiesDuties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Actively participates in assigned patient care team duties and activities, such as:
- Pre-visit planning, identifying gaps in care, and following up on orders
- Using a minimum of two patient identifiers
- Maintaining and adhering to HIPAA and all safety policies and procedures, including infection control rules and regulations
- Communicating with patients regarding disease prevention, health maintenance, and community resources
- Finalizing visits by providing information on orders and physician instructions, referrals, and scheduling follow-up visits
- Performs clinical procedures and support, including:
- Patient intake, vital measurements, and standard physical screenings
- Non-invasive and routine procedures, and tests
- Administering medication and performing injections under the direction of an advanced practice provider
- Specimen collection and processing
- Conducting CLIA waived laboratory tests
- Administering first aid or performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Demonstrating the knowledge and skills needed to provide age-appropriate care for patients
- Delivers quality customer service by:
- Communicating with diverse patients while demonstrating cultural sensitivity
- Monitoring clinical areas to minimize patient wait times and to address any potential acute situations
- Maintaining clean and safe patient areas
- Preparing patient and exam rooms, and serving as a chaperone as needed
- Acting as an interpreter, using proper and formal grammar
- Assists with clerical duties, such as:
- Setting up and stocking the clinic
- Cleaning up supplies
- Providing backup support for the front office as needed
- Answering calls and scheduling appointments
- Entering appropriate documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR)
- Participates in quality improvement efforts by:
- Following schedule management procedures to ensure productivity goals are achieved
- Reporting patient safety incidents
- Demonstrating knowledge of mandated reporting obligations
- Attending meetings and trainings
- Performs other related duties as required.
Typical QualificationsThese are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE: Medical Assistant I
One (1) year of experience providing clinical support performing the duties described above that leads to the ability to perform tasks.
Medical Assistant II
Three (3) years of experience providing clinical support performing the duties described above that leads to the ability to perform required tasks.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Six (6) months’ experience in a surgical environment performing Medical Assistant duties.
- Medical Assistant Certificate from an accredited school in medical assisting (such as is offered by a private or non-profit vocational training program, adult education or community college program, etc.).
- Valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certificate at time of employment and maintenance thereafter.
DESIRED - Bilingual (English/Spanish)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of:
- age-appropriate care,
- domestic violence mandatory reporting,
- cultural competence,
- clinic duties, emphasis in a surgical clinic and
- standard physical screening.
General medical knowledge of:
- medical office, emphasis in a surgical clinic, and
- safety procedures.
Ability to:
- work with high volume of patients,
- internal/external and appropriately manage frequent changes,
- delays, or unexpected events, and
- effectively communicate with patients, other employees, and the public.
Supplemental Information Work is performed in an indoor health care delivery environment requiring frequent contact with patients and the public.

Applicants must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.
