Job Description:
WIC Nutritionist
Purpose:
Under close supervision, this position provides the delivery of health nutrition’s services for designated clinic.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.- Delivers group and individual nutrition and breastfeeding education according to agency approved Nutrition Education Plan.
- Performs participant income and health screenings, including obtaining ID, residency, and health history; measuring height, weight and length of WIC client; plotting on growth grid; calculating income and BMI; performing finger stick; and determining conditions of nutritional need.
- Prescribes supplemental food package, assess need for breastfeeding pumps and supplies, and issues in accordance with Federal, State and Local policies and procedures.
- Screens immunization record to obtain immunization status.
- Refers participants to appropriate community, health and human service resources as needed.
- Issues and maintains inventory of returned formula, breast pumps and supplies, and educational material according to policy.
- Participates in assigned health fairs, community events and projects and makes presentations to groups as assigned.
- Prepares bulletin boards with nutrition messages according to agency approved Nutrition Education Plan.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.- Knowledge of Federal, State, City, and Local policies and regulations that pertain to WIC services.
- Knowledge of principles and practice of nutrition, breastfeeding physiology, anatomy, and counseling techniques.
- Knowledge of public health programs, social services and client needs.
- Skill in providing nutrition and breastfeeding education and excellent customer service and support.
- Skill in handling multiple tasks, organizing and prioritizing.
- Skill in using computers and related software applications.
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to communicate information and ideas, effectively, clearly and concisely with others.
- Ability to interact effectively and professionally with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, education, racial, ethnic and professional backgrounds; managers, co-workers, and members of the public and professional groups.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to Food and Nutrition.
Licenses and Certifications Required:- Valid Class C Texas Driver License.
- Completion of all required WIC modules during the probationary period
Preferred Qualifications:- Experience providing customer service to underserved communities
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Ability to provide reliable transportation and travel to more than one work location
- Experience communicating effectively and teaching classes
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to work outside 7:30am-4:30pm and some weekends

Position Overview:
The WIC nutritionist will assess income and nutritional needs to determine eligibility. Deliver group and individual nutrition and breastfeeding education according to program plan. Perform screening which includes identification, residence, and health history. Assign food packages, issue benefits and conduct nutritional presentations.

Salary and Benefits:- Salary Range is $23.76 - $27.32
- This position comes with a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical and dental coverage, paid sick leave, vacation and personal time, and a retirement plan.
Physical Work Location:- Various Locations
Hours:- Monday - Thursday 7:30 am - 4:30pm
- Friday 7:30am -1:30pm
**Hours may vary due to operational needs. Evenings and weekends may be required.
Immunization Requirement:
Austin Public Health employees must comply with the department’s immunization policy.
Travel:
This position may require travel to multiple work locations.

City Government
The City of Austin is a progressive, full-service municipal organization operating under the Council-Manager form of government. Austin has a 10-1 council system with an at-large Mayor and Council Members that represent ten districts. The Mayor and Council Members may serve in their respective seats for four years with a maximum of two consecutive terms.
The City Council appoints the City Manager who is the chief administrative and executive officer of the City.
