    The Job

    Eligible for Promotion Upon Successful Completion of Trainee Period!*

    The Department of Risk Management is recruiting for Workers' Compensation Adjuster Trainees who receive and review workers' compensation claims and reports and determine if occupational illness or injury is compensable; develop documentation for claim reports by reviewing and requesting substantiating reports from physicians, supervisors and witnesses; and explain to injured workers their benefits and legal rights under Workers' Compensation Laws. This is the trainee level of the series. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while receiving training and acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills required for promotion to the Workers' Compensation Adjuster journey-level position.

    A hybrid telework schedule may be offered upon successful completion of the trainee period with satisfactory work performance. The department may also offer a 9/80 schedule, where incumbents enjoy a nine-day biweekly schedule.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Certificate: A valid California Self Insurance A dministrator Certificate must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire or be terminated.

    Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment,applicants must successfully pass a background check, including fingerprinting, verification of employment history, and physical exam/drug test.

    Travel:
    Travel throughout the county may be required. Employees will be required to make provision for transportation. Mileage reimbursement may be available. At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced and maintained for the individual providing the transportation.

    Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.

    *Promotion: Incumbents in the class of Workers' Compensation Adjuster Trainee are eligible for promotion to Workers' Compensation Adjuster (journey-level) upon meeting the minimum qualifications for Workers' Compensation Adjuster and upon successful completion of the trainee period with receipt of a satisfactory work progress report. Incumbents must promote within twelve (12) months of hire or be terminated.

    Minimum Requirements

    Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
    Experience: Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience working as a workers' compensation claims assistant or medical only claims adjuster or comparable classification, which included primary responsibility for calculating workers' compensation benefits, scheduling medical appointments, preparing benefit notices, processing claims, authorizing payment for medical appointments and procedures, and other related duties.

    Substitution: Successful completion of courses taken toward the Insurance Education Association certificate (or comparable coursework involving State of California workers' compensation laws) may be substituted at a rate of one (1) class for six (6) months of experience. Completed college coursework in finance or accounting, medical or paralegal studies, may be substituted at a rate of twelve (12) semester (18 quarter) units for six (6) months of experience. Classes/coursework may substitute for a maximum of six (6) months of the required experience.
