Job Description:Vocational InternPurpose:Under direct supervision, this internship position develops skills and assists in performing routine automotive and repair functions to develop a working knowledge of a targeted area in municipal government.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Refuels and performs preventive maintenance on a variety of types of vehicles and other equipment.
- Changes all type of tires and perform repairs to small tires.
- Lubricates vehicles and changes oil and filters.
- Initiates minor repairs and changes belts, hoses, windshield wipers, etc.
- Records maintenance and service information and data on designated forms.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

- Ability to use tools effectively in repair of equipment.
- Ability to read and understand vehicle service manuals and lubrication charts.
- Ability to follow proper safety practices and procedures necessary to operate various types of equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:Education and/or Equivalent Experience:- Graduation from an AISD or DVISD High School campus (end of current school year).
- Completed one (1) year in Automotive Career & Technical Education at Crockett Early College, Northeast Early College, or Del Valle High School.
- Be at least 18 years of age by internship start date.

Applicants are expected to follow all directions as listed in this job posting. The Fleet Equipment Technician Intern position is for graduating students of Austin Independent School District (AISD) and Del Valle Independent School District (DVISD) who completed the Automotive Career & Technical Education Program at the campuses of Crockett, Northeast and Del Valle High Schools.
The Fleet Internship Program provides students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a professional fleet environment. Interns will continue developing their technical skills as automotive/equipment technicians while exploring career opportunities within the automotive, equipment, and fleet maintenance industry.
This program is intended to help students build practical experience, strengthen their technical foundation, and prepare for future careers in the automotive field-whether that path continues with the City of Austin Fleet Mobility Services or elsewhere in the industry.
The Fleet Equipment Technician Intern will assist Fleet Equipment Technicians with maintenance and repairs and perform basic preventative maintenance service and very basic automotive and/or equipment repairs.
In addition, may work on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles, trucks and equipment such as police vehicles, ambulances, fire apparatus, refuse (garbage) trucks, and off-road, unique and unusual vehicles and equipment.
