    Position Description
    Performs a variety of duties to assist Veterinarian in the Lab Animal Resources Center (LARC).

    Major/Essential Functions
    • This position will primarily support the LARC Cancer Animal Core Facility. This position provides technical expertise in veterinary nursing care, clinical observations, and/or surgical manipulations of research animals. This position will oversee the day-to-day identification, reporting, and communication of clinical cases in the LARC facilities under the guidance of the Institutional Veterinarian.
    • Assists in operating and maintaining the Cancer Animal Facility imaging equipment, including a microCT scanner, pathology slide scanner, IVIS, and others. Assists with operating and maintaining the LARC diagnostic laboratory for routine procedures, including hematology and clinical chemistries.
    • Assist researchers on cancer protocols with animal-related duties, including experimental design, animal identification, minor surgeries, post operative monitoring, administering medications and study compounds, routine data collections (body weights, body condition scores, blood, fluids), tissue collections for necropsy, tissue processing for pathology and molecular analysis, and other duties as assigned by the Veterinarian.
    • Maintaining proper medical and research records and creating reports to collate and demonstrate experimental results using common applications such as Word, Excel, and Access.
    • Assist with daily animal health checks by husbandry staff. Monitors the health status of all animals and reports abnormal clinical findings to the Veterinarian and/or research staff as directed. Initiates and monitors medical treatments of all animals as directed by the Veterinarian. Become familiar with commonly seen medical problems in laboratory animals and their treatments. Maintain all forms and methods of animal health and treatment identification.
    • Assist with rodent health monitoring program as needed, including collecting, preserving, and preparing blood, urine, stool, and tissue samples as needed for testing and shipment. Collect post-mortem specimens for evaluation and shipment as needed. Perform any other diagnostic testing as directed by the Veterinarian.
    • Assist with the surgical preparation area as needed. Set up surgical packs. Assist with anesthesia, surgical prep, and surgical procedures as needed. Maintain proper medical and surgical records databases. Calculate drug doses and frequencies.
    • Assist in hands-on technical training of researchers, and research staff, including: animal handling and restraint, injections, gavaging, and aseptic technique. Provide technical training and guidance to husbandry staff as needed/directed by the Veterinarian. Assist husbandry staff and research staff with examinations and procedures, and alert them to emergencies and other animal related problems.
    • Maintain knowledge of current Veterinary Medical standards, Institutional standards, and regulations. Understands, follows, and assists in updating and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and Quality Assurance (QA) standards. Gathers various animal health and welfare data for the department. Collaborates with various academic and regulatory committees on behalf of the Veterinarian as directed/needed.
    • Support and assist the Veterinarian in clinical examinations, treatments, and surgeries as needed.
    • Become familiar with rodent breeding colonies, strategies, problems, and troubleshooting.


    Required Qualifications
    High school diploma or general education degree (GED); 5-10 years' experience in clinical veterinary medicine as a technician/assistant with hands on animal work including restraint, administering medications, surgical prep, surgical monitoring, basic husbandry and basic physical exam skills.
