The Entry-Level CDL Driver Instructor supports the administration and coordination of the City’s Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) Program to prepare employees for obtaining a Class A Commercial Driver License. The role delivers instructional activities, conducts hands-on skills training, evaluates trainee progress, and ensures compliance with FMCSA, DOT, and ELDT standards. The position works closely with employees, supervisors, and Human Resources to support the development of safe drivers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe following list highlights the main responsibilities of this position. While it covers the core tasks, it may not include every duty that could be assigned. Employees may be asked to take on other responsibilities as needed to support the team and department.
- Coordinates all aspects of ELDT program activities, including road test preparation, instructional delivery, and CDL skills assessments.
- Prepares and delivers instructional activities covering driver qualification requirements, safe driving methods, and safe work procedures.
- Conducts hands-on behind-the-wheel training in designated CDL practice areas, instructing, monitoring, and evaluating trainees in the safe operation of commercial vehicles and trailers.
- Observes, evaluates, and documents trainee performance; provides consistent feedback and communicates progress with supervisors and HR.
- Maintains regulatory documentation to ensure FMCSA, DOT, and ELDT compliance.
- Prepares and maintains training records, certificates, and documentation required under CFR 380.503 and FMCSA standards.
- Stays current with CDL training standards, regulatory changes, and industry best practices; recommends process improvements and ensures compliance with Federal and State standards.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS - High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Class A CDL with a satisfactory driving record.
- Must meet all applicable State qualification requirements for CMV instructors with a minimum of two (2) years of experience driving a CMV requiring a Class A CDL.
- Working knowledge of DOT and FMCSA regulations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Lead instructor or facilitator experience.
COMPETENCIES AND ENVIRONMENT KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain records and manage both hard copy and online scheduling systems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally. Work involves constant vision, hearing, talking, and climbing, including climbing into and out of large CDL trucks. Frequent handling and fine motor work are required, along with occasional standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, and use of foot controls. Rare activities include kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, twisting, and balancing.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in the classroom, designated CDL practice areas, and vehicle environments, with exposure to outdoor conditions during driving instruction. This is a
safety-sensitive position requiring adherence to health and safety protocols.
