    ABOUT THE POSITION

    There is currently one (1) full-time 3-year fixed-term Maintenance Equipment Operator vacancy (75 hours biweekly) in Marin County Parks.

    Maintenance Equipment Operators independently perform a full range of maintenance work, including the use of hand/power tools and operating small, medium, and heavy equipment. Under the direction of the supervisor, this position will work on projects associated with the Marin County Open Space District’s Road and Trail Plan, and the Vegetation Management Plan, from winter storm damage to routine maintenance. Incumbents use a variety of hand / power tools, and motorized equipment to perform minor carpentry, plumbing, grading and maintenance work. Maintenance Equipment Operators also participate with other agencies in training in the use of Best Management Practices for fire road and trail maintenance and construction. The incumbent in this position will work with team members within Marin County Parks, including seasonal staff and volunteers, on erosion control projects on fire roads, trails and in the development of park recreational facilities.

    ABOUT YOU

    Our Highly Qualified Candidate will have personal and professional integrity, be highly organized, possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service by working effectively with all visitors and members of the public. The successful candidate will be able to work with a small-medium size crew or independently for extended periods in remote locations, off-hours, and weekend schedules, and outdoors in any weather conditions.

    Candidate is willing to learn and gain experience in: work safety procedures, using sound independent judgment within established procedural guidelines, the safe use of light equipment and power tools (including chainsaws in urban and backcountry settings, motorized equipment such as mini-excavators, dozers, water tenders, dump trucks, equipment transport, masticators, mowers, chippers, and motorized wheelbarrows) is ideal, as well as some experience in construction, carpentry, masonry, irrigation and labor tasks such as digging and hauling materials.

    The ability to work well as part of a group and independently while maintaining good communication with co-workers is also an important element of the position.

    Be willing and able to learn techniques of basic: water dynamics associated with erosion control and watershed management. This includes Best Management Practices associated with fire road maintenance, trail maintenance, and vegetation management.
    Possession of a valid Class A California Driver’s License at time of appointment is highly desired.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Knowledge of:
    • Operation and use of tools and equipment used in park and open space construction, maintenance, resource restoration and facility repair such as four-wheel drive vehicles, chainsaws, trail machines, front loaders, dump trucks, backhoes, jackhammers and others.
    • Operation of medium and heavy motorized equipment such as bulldozers, skid steers, excavators, road graders, gradalls, heavy duty transport trucks, chippers, compressors, cement mixers, hand tools, power tools and other small, medium and heavy equipment.
    • Planning, field reconnaissance, layout, installation and maintenance of fire roads and trails.
    • Methods, capabilities, limitations and safety practices associated with the operation of light to heavy equipment.
    • Methods, techniques and materials used in the maintenance and repair of roads, unpaved and fire protection roads, hiking, biking and equestrian trails, park and open space facilities, vegetation management, habitat restoration, earthwork, watershed hydrology management and other related repairs.
    • Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals, some of whom may be upset or hostile.

    Ability to:
    • Perform skilled park, landscape and open space facilities construction and maintenance.
    • Interpret and work from sketches, rough drafts, blueprints, topographic maps and prepared plans for minor projects.
    • Read colored flags, grade stakes, survey markers and land topography and use a construction transit.
    • Understand and read maps, written specifications/instructions and verbal instructions.
    • Work independently, with a crew, and as a leader with other workers in performing skilled park and open space construction and maintenance in a variety of conditions and at remote locations.
    • Periodically supervise crews in maintenance projects, construction, repair work, safety operations and traffic flagging in the area of work assigned.
    • Operate a variety of vehicles and mechanical equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
    • Perform routine mathematical computations.
    • Exercise independent judgment within established guidelines, sometimes without close supervision.
    • Comply with laws, regulations and professional practices of the County and the Open Space District.
    • Communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, administration, other departments and the public.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Any combination of education and experience that would provide the necessary knowledge and abilities listed below. Typically, equivalent to three years of experience in park or open space maintenance work, construction, heavy equipment operation or a closely related field. Training and/or education in park or resource management, forestry, horticulture, environmental sciences or a closely related field may be substituted for the experience outlined above on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of one year.

    Substitution: Completion of a recognized formal apprenticeship in heavy equipment operation may be substituted for required experience.

    Certificates and Licenses
    • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving history as obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles is required at time of appointment.
    • Possession of a valid Class A Driver's License is required within one year of appointment.
    • Possession of or ability to obtain within one year of appointment designated certificates in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

    Physical Demands: Must have the ability to perform heavy physical labor and lift materials weighing up to 40 pounds and heavier weights with proper equipment.

    Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
