    Under the general direction and supervision of the Public Health Program Manager/Health Officer and the WIC Director, the Registered Dietitian Nutritionists is responsible for the management of participant information and needs in providing direct services and education to WIC clients. Primary purpose is ensuring that WIC clinics provide an appropriate family-friendly environment, which encompasses all of the Being Person Centered (BePC principles). Provide community outreach and nutrition related activities. Promotes and supports breastfeeding as the norm in the agency, the WIC project and the community.

    • Utilize nutrition and breastfeeding knowledge and skills to screen and assess, counsel and educate; provide appropriate referrals; and support the goals of the WIC Program through effective interpretation of WIC policies and procedures.
    • Assist with organization and management of WIC clinics through proper scheduling of participants for individualized nutrition sessions, mid-certification appointments and certification clinics.
    • Assess client maternal and child health needs according to established WIC procedures and coordinate with other staff for effective delivery of all client services.
    • Develop individual participant care plans based on identified need and document in WIC data system.
    • Provide individualized nutrition education to participants based on identified needs and determine efficient and effective use of educational materials appropriate for language and education level.
    • Tailor food prescriptions for participants based on the assessment of participant need.
    • Make appropriate referrals to physicians and other service providers based on individual needs and provide follow-up for identified nutrition risks.
    • Provide all high-risk counseling contacts.
    • Document client assessments, counseling, and referrals on Wisconsin WIC data system.
    • Participate in planning nutrition education and implementing nutrition service plans.
    • Develop and implement presentations for collaborative agencies and the community.
    • Maintain security and confidentiality of all participants' and their records.
    • Attend appropriate meetings and seminars for continuing education purposes to obtain a minimum of 50 hours of continuing education every 5 years and document in staff training plan and Commission of Dietetic Registration Portfolio.
    • Responsible for implementation and maintenance of Fit Families Grant and Fit Families caseload.
    • Develop and implement WIC outreach activities.
    • Act as a member of the Incident Command Structure and maintain proper training to respond to public health emergencies.
    • Participate in chronic disease prevention and nutrition promotion activities within community.
    • Assists with other duties/responsibilities as assigned.


    • Bachelor's degree in Nutritional Sciences or Dietetics.
    • Wisconsin Certified Dietitian, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with the National Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) or registration eligible upon hiring and obtains within 6 months. Must maintain RDN and CD status.
    • Work experience in public health, community nutrition/maternal-child health, lactation or nutrition. Previous WIC program experience preferred.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of nutrition and maternal, infant, and child health.
    • Certified Lactation Counselor, Certified Lactation Specialist, or Certified Lactation Educator preferred.
    • Must successfully pass criminal and caregiver background check.


    • Knowledge of the goals and objectives of the WIC Program and general public health services.
    • Ability to respect the diversity of the population served by WIC, and the ability to work effectively with a low income, multi-cultural population.
    • Knowledge of OSHA regulations. SDS sheets, safety manuals, etc.
    • Knowledge of the operation of standard office equipment, office practices and procedures, computer software, electronic medical records and the ability to work with automated data systems including word processing.
    • Ability to maintain prompt, predictable and reliable attendance. Willingness to travel as needed.
    • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive data.
    • Ability to relate to diverse populations with sensitivity to cultural and ethnic differences.
    • Articulate; good verbal and written skills.
    • Exhibits good organizational skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
    • High degree of accountability for agency services and for well-being of clients.
