    INTERN - ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES - GIS AND UTILITY OPERATIONS

    CASUAL INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

    Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

    Paid intern positions are available within the Environmental Services Department. The positions are an excellent part-time opportunity for an individual with GIS skills wishing to obtain work experience in the Environmental Studies field. Current student enrollment is not required.

    Enrichment Opportunities
    • Learn and work with the City’s GIS and Office 365 suite of applications.
    • Learn concepts of engineering problem solving, data analysis, data management, and GIS database design and development.

    Hours : the selected candidate will work under supervision on weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The specific days and hours will be decided by the hiring manager in consultation with the selected candidate.

    Essential Job Functions

    (May include, but are not limited to, the following):
    • Organize and digitize information from existing documentation to build a digital Operations & Maintenance (O&M) record repository.
    • Review available O&M records and collaborate with users, supervisor, and administrators to define database features and functionality.
    • Assist in creating and organizing Excel and GIS database for record storage.
    • Assist users and supervisor with designing and utilizing GIS database, including using GIS model builder to automate data import/export.
    • Assist and train users to use the GIS database.
    • Assist with creation of training materials and how-to guides.
    • Scan, label, and/or bookmark historical data into logical, searchable pdf files and/or Excel spreadsheets.
    • Help identify ways to clean up the existing database content and presentations.
    • Work effectively with City staff, consultants, administrators, and the general public; the candidate is expected to conduct him/herself in a highly professional manner at all times while representing the City.
    • Assists City staff with other duties as desired, including some administrative tasks as needed.

    WORKING CONDITIONS
    Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven, and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in using a computer keyboard and certain tools. The position also requires near and far vision when reading written work related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal customer service. The need to lift, drag, carry, and push equipment, tools and supplies up to 50 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education:
    High school graduation or GED equivalent AND
    completion of at least one course in Environmental Studies, Computer Information Systems, Geographic Information System (GIS), or a related field.
    • Interest in Environmental Studies and willingness to learn.
    • Positive work attitude, reliable and responsible.
    • Ability to write and communicate concisely and effectively.
    • Proficient computer skills with basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and OneDrive.
    • Advanced computer skills may include (not required) Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and GIS.
    • Good organizational skills, detail-oriented and good data keeper.

    License/Certificates:
    Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California class C driver's license and a safe driving record, or the ability to provide alternate transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.
