    Job Summary

    This position is located in Las Vegas within the Construction Division on crew 926. Incumbent will work in the field performing required construction inspections, testing, and surveying; complete field and office work to assure contractor's work is documented per the specifications and quantities for prompt contractor payment.

    Essential Qualifications

    Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering, physics, math or closely related field and two years of experience in a specialized engineering function or program area which involved the application of work procedures, standards and controls; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of progressively responsible experience as described above; OR one year of experience as an Engineering Technician III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

    Job Duties

    • Assist professional engineers with construction inspection and engineering support activities on highway and transportation projects. Perform engineering calculations including quantity measurements, elevations, grades, slopes, and other construction-related computations.
    • Perform field inspections of roadway construction activities including grading, paving, drainage structures, traffic control, and related work to ensure compliance with contract plans, specifications, and applicable standards.
    • Collect, record, and maintain field documentation including daily reports, measurements, inspection records, and supporting data necessary to verify work performed and support contractor payment estimates.
    • Conduct construction surveying and layout activities including staking alignments, slopes, structures, and control points; perform horizontal and vertical measurements using surveying instruments and electronic equipment. Act as lead-off rodman, or survey party chief.
    • Perform materials sampling and testing for soils, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete in accordance with established procedures and specifications; document results and report discrepancies. Operate, maintain, and calibrate testing and surveying equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability of measurements and test results.
    • Maintain accurate project records including inspection logs, test results, quantity calculations, and related documentation using department software systems and standard reporting methods.
    • Review construction plans, specifications, and contract documents to verify work performed meets design requirements and applicable standards.
    • Communicate with engineers, contractors, inspectors, and other personnel to resolve field issues, clarify construction requirements, and coordinate project activities.
    • Perform related duties as assigned on Work Performance Standards.

    Knowledge of: standard safety procedures when working in labs, on construction sites and setting up protective barriers.

    Skills in: construction principles, practices and procedures; agency policies and procedures related to the assignment; standards, guidelines and criteria.

    Ability to: communicate effectively both orally and in writing; deal firmly and tactfully with others inside and outside the agency; work independently and lead the work activities of others; read and interpret parcel maps, subdivision plats, construction plans and specifications, engineering drawings, department policy and procedures and federal and State regulations and guidelines; identify problems and recommend appropriate solutions; make field adjustments in response to unusual circumstances; make independent decisions related to specific work assignments; and all other knowledge, skills, and abilities required at the lower levels.
