    Are you a current junior in a Charleston County High School who is interested in public safety and leadership? This paid summer internship offers students the opportunity to build leadership skills, explore career paths, and gain hands-on experience. Throughout the internship students will explore how different parts of the department work together by learning about Charleston County 9-1-1, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Awendaw-McClellanville Fire Department, and Emergency Management.

    Program Overview:

    The program’s goal is to provide meaningful exposure to careers within public safety that inspire youth development, cultivate leadership, and promote awareness, diversity, and inclusion. In this temporary paid internship, students will be introduced to public safety through hands-on learning experiences such as emergency preparedness training, basic firefighting skills, introductory emergency medical skills, and entry-level call taking skills through simulation.

    HIRING PAY RATE: $16.30

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Students will:
    • Work 6-hour days Monday through Friday from June 12, 2026 - July 16, 2026.
    • Participate in at least 1 ride-along with EMS.
    • Gain basic leadership and career-readiness skills.
    • Create weekly journals to meet Charleston County’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) requirements.


    Minimum Qualifications

    This program aims to develop professional, career-ready young adults. Students selected for the program must arrive on time and maintain consistent attendance for the full duration of the program. Students must attend at least 120 hours to obtain 1 credit towards graduation.

    • Students must:
    • Be professional, reliable, respectful, and adaptable.
    • Be enrolled as a junior in a Charleston County Public High School, and a permanent resident of Charleston County. Students will need to upload their most current school transcripts with the application as verification.
    • Be responsible in maintaining their grades and attendance throughout the school year. Students must not be on any type of Academic Probation.
    • Must follow all safety protocols.
    • Be a US citizen, permanent resident, or possess an Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
    • Not have any felony conviction(s); misdemeanor(s) will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and disposition information must be provided.
    • Be able to pass a background investigation including but not limited to a driving record, employment history, education, and reference check.
    • All interns must follow Charleston County’s drug-free workplace policy. Those found with reasonable suspicion may be subject to a drug screening and/or termination.
