    Position:
    Upon appointment, you will hold the functional title of Section Director of Microbiology at Olive View Medical Center or Harbor-UCLA Medical Center

    Workforce shortage bonuses:
    Due to the Manpower Shortage Recruitment, new appointments and current incumbents shall be compensated at Step 7 of the applicable salary range and a shortage range of twenty (20%) percent . This is in effect until June 30, 2026 or until it is determined that a shortage no longer exists, whichever is sooner.

    Definition:
    Plans, coordinates, advises and evaluates the technical operations of a clinical microbiology laboratory.

    Essential Job Functions

    Consults with medical supervision or attending physician staff members to identify microbiological tests considered vital to aid in the diagnosis of patient illness in a particular hospital setting.

    Analyzes requests for microbiological tests and resolves resources are vital for their performance at various frequencies in terms of personnel, equipment, materials and other items of supply.

    Decides whether the capability required for test performance at a projected frequency exists in-house and/or what action is vital to produce such capability; initiates, with approval of medical supervisor, appropriate action to install tests in-house or arrange for performance at another laboratory.

    Determine specific equipment, media, and other materials and supplies will be used in the performance of individual microbiological test procedures.

    Establishes the scope and nature of quality control procedures needed to assure test results are accurate and reliable. Continuously supervises how these procedures are performed to ensure efficiency.

    Analyzes and interprets laboratory data, maintains records under required standards for the laboratory, and prepares oral and written reports.

    Plans, develops, and conducts an ongoing education and consultation program with the hospital's attending doctors and healthcare staff. This program builds their awareness and understanding of microbiology laboratory capabilities. It also addresses specific problems of microbial infection and helps prevent epidemiological infection in the hospital.

    Aligns with federal, state and local regulatory requirements.

    Serves as a member of various hospital committees including the Infection Control, Antibiotic Stewardship and Infectious Disease committee to establish and maintain clinical microbiology practices.

    Requirements

    A Doctor of Philosophy Degree * or Doctoral degree * in medical microbiology or a closely related field is required. It must be from an accredited college or university. One year of experience at the level equivalent to Clinical Microbiologist I ** in an approved clinical laboratory *** is also required.

    ** Experience at the level of clinical microbiologist I in the County of Los Angeles is defined as: Assists a clinical microbiologist supervisor to plan organize, direct, and evaluate the technical operations of a clinical microbiology laboratory.

    *** An approved laboratory is defined as: A clinical laboratory that has a federal issued Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment Laboratory Certificate of Accreditation that authorizes the laboratory to accept human specimens for the purpose of performing laboratory examinations.
    License:
    Licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist or a Clinical Microbiologist Scientist issued by the California Department of Public Health **** .

    **** Applicants must ensure the License and Certification Section of the application is completed. Include the license title, certificate number, issue date, expiration date, and the name of the issuing agency. Alternatively, attach a clear photocopy of the credential upon filing or email it to the analyst within 7 calendar days of filing online. All required licenses and certifications must be active and unrestricted, or your application will not be accepted.

    Applicants with the experience outside California must include their certification number of the state on the application with including the Clinical Laboratory Scientist or a Clinical Microbiologist Scientist issued by the California Department of Public Health license . The certification must be for Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Clinical Microbiologist Scientist from the relevant state. Without the required license number, your experience will not be considered.
    Physical class:
    PHYSICAL CLASS II:
    Light - This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

    Additional credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications:
    • Experience beyond the minimum qualifications, comparable to a Clinical Microbiologist I, supporting a clinical microbiologist supervisor in planning, organizing, leading, and reviewing the technical activities of a clinical microbiology laboratory.
    • Experience as a Committee on Postgraduate Educational Programs (CPEP) fellow in Medical and Public Health Laboratory Microbiology.
    • An American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM) certification granted by the American Society for Microbiology.

    To receive credit for your ABMM certification(s), you must attach a copy to your application at the time of filing or email a copy to the analyst within seven (7) calendar days of filing online. Please include the exam number and the exam title.
    Out of class information:
    County employees who wish to meet the requirements using out-of-class experience will be considered for this examination. Those claiming out-of-class experience should describe their out-of-class duties in detail in the Work Experience and Supplemental Questions sections of their application. Applicants are also encouraged to submit any supporting documentation such as out of class/additional responsibility bonuses, verification of experience documents, and performance evaluations in order to assist staff’s review of applicants' qualifications.     Additional Information

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:
    This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience and education based upon application information, desirable qualifications and supplemental questionnaire, weighted 100%.

    A passing score of 70% or higher on this examination to be added to the eligible register for 12 months.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
