    Job Summary

    This position assists the Park Supervisor in the overall park management at Sand Harbor State Park, located 3 miles South of Incline Village, Nevada with more focused park management at Cave Rock State Park, located 6 miles from Zephyr Cove, Nevada. Both Parks offer a variety of year-round recreation opportunities to over 1 million visitors annually. Nevada State Park Rangers are generalists; typical daily duties include custodial duties and maintaining park buildings/grounds, collecting and accounting for fees, preparing reports and handling correspondence. Other focused duties include hiring and supervision of subordinate park staff, responding to visitor inquiries, and resource protection, by managing an invasive species program at the boat ramps to prevent the introduction of invasive species into Lake Tahoe. Incumbents may prepare and present interpretive programs and create special events designed to involve more of our communities in our state parks. Incumbents will also prepare and manage commercial use agreements, park budgets and monitor commercial filming/photography and wedding activities.

    At Sand Harbor and Cave Rock State Parks, intense summer visitation requires extended periods of fast paced work. This is a commissioned/law enforcement position and is subject to call back, working various hours and shifts, including evenings, holidays and weekends and in a variety of weather conditions. As a state park peace officer, incumbents write citations, make arrests, handle accidents and incidents, resolve disputes, keep the peace, and respond to emergency situations as required. Live-in law enforcement academy training will be provided. The physical agility exam consists of: a) Vertical jump of no less than 14 inches; b) The Illinois Agility Run in 19.5 seconds or less; c) complete not less than 30 sit-ups in 1 minute; d) complete not less than 23 consecutive push-ups; e) 300 meter run in 68 seconds or less; f) 1.5 mile run/walk in 16 minutes and 57 seconds or less; g) lift and carry a 70-90 pound bag of cement/sand from the ground and carry 10 feet to tailgate of a standard pick-up truck and then return, repeated three times; h) 100 yard swim in 5 minutes. Park residency is required in the provided state housing at this duty location. Park Ranger positions provide qualifying experience for advancement to the Park Supervisor series.

    Park Rangers (Commissioned) participate in operations, law enforcement, resource management, interpretation, and maintenance activities at an assigned State park.

    Essential Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major or minor in park management, outdoor recreation management, ecology, forestry, biology, agriculture, education, natural or environmental sciences, horticulture, history/folklore, wildlife management, museum management, park interpretation, business or public administration, criminal justice, or related field, and one year of professional park ranger experience in park operations and maintenance; OR one year of experience as a Park Ranger I (Commissioned) in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

    Job Duties

    Coordinate and participate in day-to-day park operation and maintenance projects; train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned seasonal personnel; clean and maintain park buildings, grounds, offices, restrooms, and vehicles; schedule and assign personnel to collect fees, staff visitor centers, and conduct tours.

    Gather, record and audit information related to visitor use and fees collected; take inventory and submit supply requests; prepare activity reports on areas of responsibility; make reservations and respond to letters and telephone inquiries; operate park weather station, sales outlet and water safety and control devices at the park.

    Enforce laws and regulations including applicable State laws, county ordinances, and park rules and policies; investigate accidents, write citations, make arrests, conduct search and rescue operations, respond to emergency situations, and interact with other law enforcement agencies to preserve the peace and protect park visitors.

    Implement the resource management plan; identify resource problems; develop solutions and initiate projects for resource preservation and rehabilitation.

    Participate in planning, developing, and conducting special events and on-going interpretive activities such as tours, hikes, displays, exhibits, talks and visitor centers to inform park visitors of park attractions, flora, fauna, cultural and natural history, and environmental education.

    Under the general supervision of a Park Supervisor III, incumbents coordinate and oversee the operation and maintenance of a major section of a large and complex park with special features such as historical sites, visitor centers, multiple fee collection points, complex maintenance and resource protection programs, concessions and contracts, sophisticated water and sewer systems, and special use facilities, in addition to performing the full range of duties outlined in the series concept.

    Ability to: preserve and enhance the park's natural resources; prepare reports, evaluations, bulletins, and memoranda; perform literary research necessary to develop interpretive materials; plan, organize and coordinate available resources to effectively manage an assigned area of the park; and all knowledge, skills, and abilities required at the lower levels.
