    OVERVIEW

Kitsap County is seeking a dedicated and service-oriented Utilities Maintenance Worker to join our committed team in supporting an essential public service at the Recycling and Garbage Facilities. This dynamic role plays a key part in the daily functioning of the County’s solid waste system, helping to ensure clean, efficient, and safe disposal services for our residents.

If you thrive in a hands-on, outdoor environment where every day brings variety, and you're motivated by public service, this position is your chance to make a real impact. You'll interact directly with the public, maintain essential waste and recycling systems, and ensure that hazardous and solid waste are managed safely and in compliance with regulations. You’ll be part of a supportive, mission-driven team that plays a behind-the-scenes but vital role in the well-being of the Kitsap community.

With the chance to rotate between four distinct solid waste facilities-Olalla, Silverdale, and Kingston-you'll gain hands-on experience across varied environments and operational needs.

As the Utilities Maintenance Worker, you will:
    • Serve as the first point of contact for customers, greeting and guiding them through proper waste disposal and recycling procedures while delivering high-quality customer service.
    • Operate computerized point-of-sale systems to assess waste type, volume, and load size; determine appropriate fees; process payments; issue receipts; and ensure the security and accuracy of all cash handling procedures, including daily reports and bank deposits.
    • Oversee waste and recycling operations by monitoring container capacities, leveling loads, coordinating hauling schedules, and directing on-site traffic to maintain safety and operational flow.
    • Perform facility upkeep and equipment maintenance, including landscaping, snow removal, janitorial duties, and routine servicing of small equipment such as weed trimmers and lawnmowers.
    • Manage limited quantities of household hazardous waste, ensuring safe handling, proper documentation, and adherence to all environmental and safety regulations.
    • Support site continuity and safety during inclement weather or power outages, ensuring compliance with established protocols and maintaining a safe environment for both staff and the public.

    What You Bring:
    • Professional Experience: Six months of customer service and cashiering experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the desired knowledge, skills and ability to perform the work effectively in a public-facing operational environment
    • Specialized Expertise: Proficient in basic arithmetic and cashiering procedures including cash handling, account reconciliation, and deposit preparation and skilled in using data processing systems, Microsoft Office, and department-specific software to ensure accurate fee collection, secure fund management, and efficient recordkeeping.
    • Technical Expertise: Proficiency in data processing systems, computer software applications, and common office software including Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to utilize department-specific databases, word processing, spreadsheets, and web-based systems for entering, retrieving, and researching data and records
    • Customer Service Excellence: Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships using tact, courtesy, and good judgment. Skill in dealing tactfully and courteously with the general public, including sometimes hostile individuals, while maintaining a professional demeanor under heavy workload and stressful situations
    • Additional Preferred Qualifications: Experience working outdoors, experience with solid waste and recyclable goods; experience performing janitorial and grounds keeping duties; experience performing small equipment maintenance and repair such as weed trimmers, lawnmowers and blowers.
