IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

• AQUATIC ASSESSMENT is tentatively scheduled for April 18th.
  • PRE-EMPLOYMENT: Candidates hired will start the pre-employment process immediately and will consist of a live-scan, substance abuse test, tuberculosis (TB) test, and physical (Tentatively scheduled for May 9th, provided by the City). All pre-employment clearances must be completed by May 24th.
  • ONBOARDING - Onboarding/new hire orientations will begin during the week of May 25th.
  • TRAINING WEEK - The first day of employment will commence on June 6th.
  • SUMMER PROGRAMS BEGIN - June 22nd.
• The City will provide the required CPR/First Aid/AED Certification training courses required for this position at no cost to employees; Employees who cannot attend will be responsible for obtaining this training on their own time and expense.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following list of functions, duties, and tasks is typical for this classification. THE POSITIONS/JOB ROLES:

• LIFEGUARD: Protects swimming pool and facility users by monitoring pool areas for accidents and hazards and enforcing pool safety rules.
  
  
• INSTRUCTOR GUARD: Protects swimming pool and facility users by monitoring pool areas for accidents and hazards, enforcing pool safety rules, instructing swimming and water safety lessons, and assisting in the Community Services Department's Aquatics Program activities and programs.
  

• SENIOR INSTRUCTOR GUARD: Teaches and protects swimming pool and facility users by monitoring pool areas for accidents and hazards, enforcing pool safety rules, instructing swimming and water safety lessons, and assisting in the Community Services Department's Aquatics Program activities and programs.
  

• POOL MANAGER: Organizes, coordinates, and manages pool operations for all scheduled classes, services, and free swim activities, as well as marketing and promotional activities, ensuring proper aquatics staff training and development, and adhering to local and state health and safety regulations and licensing standards.
  

ADDITIONAL GENERAL DUTIES:

• Provides customer service and general information to the public in person and by phone.
• Constantly observes all safety conditions in and around the pool and monitors use of water facilities.
• Prepares accident and incident reports.
• Perform duties as outlined in American red Cross Instruction and training modules
• Administers first aid and artificial respiration.
• Enforces rules and regulations and maintains order in the pool.
• Performs minor maintenance and clean-up work.
• Maintains a clean and orderly appearance in and around the pool.
• Attends training sessions and practices emergency response and lifesaving skills.
• Assists with the instruction of swim and water safety lessons within an aquatics program in the Community Services Department.
• Instructs pool patrons of the safety rules and regulations of the facility.
• Inspects facilities, grounds, and equipment for safety.

OTHER DUTIES:

• Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit and the City.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS

• LIFEGUARD
  
  • EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION: Completion of sophomore year of high school. Lifeguard or prior aquatics experience is desirable, including working with children and adults.
    
  • CERTIFICATION:
    
    • American Red Cross Lifeguard training certificate, including CPR and AED. Must maintain certification throughout employment in order to remain in position. This certification is required prior to being scheduled for the first shift.
    • Tuberculosis (TB) certification from the California Department of Public Health
    • Ability to obtain Title 22 certification within six months of the date of hire

• INSTRUCTOR GUARD:
  • EXPERIENCE: Must be at least 16 years old. Previous lifeguard or aquatics experience is preferable.
  • LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
    • American Red Cross or equivalent CPR, AED, Lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, and First Aid Certification. This certification is req uired prior to being scheduled for the first shift.
    • Tuberculosis (TB) certification from the California Department of Public Health
    • Ability to obtain Title 22 certification within six months of the date of hire

• SENIOR INSTRUCTOR GUARD:
  • EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or GED or equivalent. Must be at least 18 years old. Previous lifeguard or aquatics experience is preferable.
  • LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
    • Valid, current driver’s license
      • This position does not typically require driving; however, the ability to use reliable transportation for occasional offsite duties may be necessary.
    • American Red Cross or equivalent CPR, AED, Lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, and First Aid Certification. This certification is req uired prior to being scheduled for the first shift.
    • Tuberculosis (TB) certification from the California Department of Public Health
    • Ability to obtain Title 22 certification within six months of the date of hire

• POOL MANAGER:
  • EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or GED or equivalent. Two years of experience in Lifeguarding, swimming instruction, and aquatics operations, including leadership experience. Two years of supervisory experience is required.
  • LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
    • Valid, current driver’s license
      • This position does not typically require driving; however, the ability to use reliable transportation for occasional offsite duties may be necessary.
    • American Red Cross or equivalent CPR, AED, Lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, and First Aid Certification. This certification is req uired prior to being scheduled for the first shift.
    • Tuberculosis (TB) certification from the California Department of Public Health
    • Ability to obtain Title 22 certification within six months of the date of hire
    • Current Accredited Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificate. Must maintain certification throughout employment in order to remain in position
    • Lifeguarding Instructor. Must maintain certifications throughout employment in order to remain in the position

In accordance with California Government Code Section 3100, City of Placentia employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to protect the health, safety, lives, and property of the people of the State.

Retirement - California Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) PST Deferred Compensation Plan. Contribution to this account is 7.5% per pay period, the City pays 3.75% and the employee pays 3.75% deducted from salary. Additionally, employee pays 1.45% towards Medicare per paycheck.

Part-Time Alternative Health and Wellness (AHW) Leave -Sick leave equivalent accrues at 1 hour per 30 hours worked, max 40 hours per year, max accrual bank of 80 hours.
