    San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) is now accepting applications for its 2026 Summer Internship Program. SJC is looking for talented, diverse, and innovative future professionals who are eager to work in a public sector setting. The San José Mineta international Airport Internship Program is designed to help students gain professional public sector work experience related to their academic area of interest. This paid internship is a great opportunity to build networking, communication, and analytical skills. In addition, internships at SJC are project-based and can help steer students into a possible career direction.

    As a Student Intern at the Airport, you will learn and gain practical experience in multiple areas of airport operations and management. You will also be exposed to various airport industry careers while enriching your personal and educational goals.
    SJC Internships provide learning based opportunities that combine Airport business needs with a student's educational focus. Student Interns will perform project-based, para-professional level work specific to the division's core service and will be required to exercise initiative in applying education and/or skills, work semi-independently, and be resourceful and systematic in their approach to project related assignments and tasks. Summer internships are typically 10-12 weeks

    Position Duties

    SJC currently has Student Intern opportunities in the following divisions:

    Airport Operations

    This division is responsible for the day-to-day management and oversight of the Airport to ensure safe and efficient operations such as operation of the airfield, general aviation facilities, emergency planning and coordination, Airport Operations Center, badging and security coordination, parking facilities, shuttle operations, ground transportation, roadway/curbside enforcement programs, and Automatic Vehicle Identification system.

    We are recruiting two (2) interns for Airport Operations. Internship opportunities may be available in Airside, Terminal Management, and Security. The specific sections that will host interns are still being determined.

    Terminal Management:

    Projects a Terminal Intern would work on include:
    Coordinating with Airport Properties to update tenant room IDs at both terminals.Performing audits and working with Airport Facilities to repair key cores and drawers at 53 ticket counters and 36 gates.Research, create, and disseminate reports that: Influence hours of operation for terminal concessions.Allows internal and external stakeholders to view airport and industry aviation activity.Preplan for crowds during City holidays.
    Airside:
    • Intern would be assisting the Airside Supervises with reviewing and editing the Airport Certification Manual (ACM) and Airport Emergency Plan (AEP).
    • They would also assist the Construction Liaison as needed in support of project meetings
    • Assist Airside Supervisors with updates to the Ramp Rules and Regulations Handbook
    • Assist Airside Supervisors with developing our Safety Management System (SMS) Program
    • Assist with Airside related inspections as needed.

    Security Compliance:

    The Security Intern will be working with the Airport Operations Security Compliance team to ensure that the airport remains compliant under Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 49, Part 1542. Security Compliance comprises of the following areas: Airport Operations Center (AOC), Airport Badging and Permitting Office, Physical Security and Cybersecurity.

    The Security Compliance Intern will be working on the following projects:
    • Poster Program
    • Terminal/door signage replacement
    • If needed, working with the Seniors to update documents.
    • Cyber lock/key audit
    • Train/shadow with seniors on prohibited items auditing
    • Camera audit
    • Quarterly door alarm & camera swing audits
    • Updating Quick Reference Guild (QRG)
    • Updating Security Control Panel (SCP) binders
    • Updating the Airport Security Plan (ASP)

    The Intern may be exposed to other security activities and conduct smaller Security Compliance tasks

    Applicable majors include but are not limited to: Aviation and Aviation Management.

    Aviation Technology Services (ATS)

    Airport Technology Services (ATS) provides specialized technology solutions for airports, enhancing operations, security, and passenger experience. This includes systems for air traffic management, baggage handling, flight information displays, communication networks, and airport security. ATS helps streamline airport processes through automation, data integration, and advanced monitoring systems, ensuring efficient and seamless airport operations.

    ATS is recruiting for one (1) intern for infrastructure monitoring. The infrastructure monitoring internship offers hands-on experience in managing, configuring, and optimizing open-source network monitoring systems. Interns typically work on setting up Zabbix servers/agents, creating monitoring templates, configuring alerts, integrating dashboards (e.g., Grafana), and scripting checks and synthetic transactions to track IT infrastructure health.

    Key Responsibilities and Learning Outcomes
    • Infrastructure Monitoring: Track real-time performance of servers, virtual machines, and network devices (CPU, memory, traffic).
    • Improve monitoring quality through retrospective analysis of trigger precision and dependencies.
    • Configuration & Customization: Install Zabbix components, configure Active/Passive checks, and develop custom templates for specific IT environments.
    • Directly configure monitoring (metrics, triggers, alerts, etc.).
    • Create and modify monitoring templates.
    • Enhance automated alerting systems.
    • Use scripting (Python/Bash) for checks and synthetic transactions.
    • Data Visualization: Create dashboards and map network topologies to visualize data.
    • Create and modify dashboards (Zabbix/Grafana).
    • Geographically enhance host data with GIS.
    • Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in network and application layers.
    • Ensure PostgreSQL backup and high availability.

    Typical Qualifications
    • Familiarity with Linux operating systems and network protocols (SNMP, TCP/IP).
    • Interest in network/system administration, or infrastructure monitoring.
    • Proficiency with Git/GitLab/CI/CD.
    • Experience with RPM-based Linux.
    • Experience with bash/Python.
    • Knowledge with Zabbix.
    • Knowledge with Grafana.
    • Knowledge with Ansible.
    • PowerShell scripting (optional).

    Applicable majors include but are not limited to: Computer Science, Information Technology , Cybersecurity, Computer Engineering , Management Information Systems (MIS) or a related field.

    Salary Information
    Student Intern Salary Range - $15.86 - $21.65/hourly (unbenefited)

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience:
    Any combination equivalent to completion of high school and current enrollment in an accredited college or university in undergraduate or graduate program.

    Part-time positions(less than 40 hours per week) are required to participate in the City’s PTC 457 Deferred Compensation Plan per Federal regulations. Employees are required to contribute 3.75% of gross earning and the City contributes a matching amount of 3.75%. The funds contributed by the City are 100% vested upon initial deferral and will be held in a stability of principal investment. This plan is in lieu of social security and does not include any healthcare benefits or contributions.

    Part-time employees may elect to contribute additional retirement savings through the City’s Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Additional Information on both plans can be found on the City’s website.
