    About the Opportunity

    The City of Ventura Water Department is hiring a Wastewater Collection Utility Worker Trainee/I/II/III. There is currently one vacancy that the City is looking to fill immediately.

    Reporting to the Wastewater Collections Supervisor, the Wastewater Collection Utility Worker Trainee/I/II/III performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled heavy manual work, alone or as a member of a crew, in the construction, maintenance and repair and related service activities for wastewater collection systems and sewer lines.

    This position is flexibly staffed and may be filled at either level, depending on the certifications, qualifications, experience, and demonstrated skills of the incumbent, as well as the staffing needs of the City

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

    Wastewater Collection Utility Worker Trainee: This is the entry level class in the flexibly staffed Wastewater Collection Utility Worker series.

    Wastewater Collection Utility Worker I: This is the journey level class in the certified Wastewater Collection Utility Worker series. Positions in this series are flexibly staffed and are typically filled by advancement from the Wastewater Collection Utility Worker Trainee classification after meeting the wastewater collection system experience requirements and passing the California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) exam for a Grade 1 Wastewater Collection System Maintenance certification.

    Wastewater Collection Utility Worker II & III: These are the full journey level classes of the certified Wastewater Collection Utility Worker series in which incumbents work with greater independence performing the full range of skilled maintenance tasks and have authority to make operational decisions in the absence of the lead worker. Positions are flexibly staffed with advancement to this certified level after passing the CWEA exam for the requisite Grade 2 or Grade 3 Wastewater Collection System Maintenance certification and demonstrated proficiency performing the full range of duties within this certified series.

    Minimum Qualifications - Required

    Wastewater Collection Utility Worker Trainee : A combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to one year as a Maintenance Worker I (18 months related experience).

    Wastewater Collection Utility Worker I : A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to one year in the maintenance and repair of wastewater collection systems or related work, and possession of a CWEA Collection System Maintenance Grade 1 certificate.

    Wastewater Collection Utility Worker II : A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to two years in the maintenance and repair of wastewater collection systems or the performance of related work, and possession of a CWEA Collection System Maintenance Grade 2 certificate.

    Wastewater Collection Utility Worker III : A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to three years in the maintenance and repair of wastewater collection systems or the performance of related work, and possession of a CWEA Collection System Maintenance Grade 3 certificate.

    LICENSE/CERTIFICATES

    Certificates:

    Wastewater Collection Utility Worker Trainee: Possession of Grade 1 CWEA Collection System Maintenance Certification desired .

    Wastewater Collection Utility Worker I: Possession of Grade 1 CWEA Collection System Maintenance Certification required at time of appointment.

    Wastewater Collection Utility Worker II: Possession of Grade 2 CWEA Collection System Maintenance Certification required at time of appointment.

    Wastewater Collection Utility Worker III: Possession of Grade 3 CWEA Collection System Maintenance Certification required at time of appointment.

    License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver license is required. Within 6 months of employment, incumbent is required to obtain and thereafter maintain a valid California Class A driver's license with Standard Transmission and Air Brakes Restriction Tanker Endorsement.

    Ventura Water provides drinking water to more than 109,000 people through approximately 32,000 water service connections. This complex water system has more than 391 miles of pipeline, 3 water treatment plants, 23 pump stations and 31 reservoirs. Our community relies on three 100% local water sources - the Ventura River, Lake Casitas, and local groundwater wells, as well as, providing reclaimed water from the Ventura Water Reclamation Facility to two municipal golf courses, the Ventura Marina area, and private customers for landscape irrigation. We maintain a full-service laboratory and monitor our water quality daily.

Candidates will be notified about their status after the filing deadline.
    • Those candidates whose qualifications most closely match the requirements of the position will be invited to a qualifying panel interview process. Candidates will be notified of specifics after the examination process has been completed. Initial panel interviews may be conducted in-person or via video teleconference. Candidates will be notified of specifics at the appropriate time.


    The Eligibility List established for this classification may be used to fill other regular and temporary vacancies at the discretion of the City.

    THE SCHEDULE

    • Week of March 16, 2026 - Candidates will be notified by email of their status by this date.
    • Week of April 6, 2026 - Oral Panel Interviews are tentatively scheduled for this date. Qualifying candidates will be notified by email or phone if they are invited to the panel interview process.
    • Department Selection Interviews will be scheduled promptly after the oral panel interviews have been completed. Qualifying candidates will be notified by email if they are invited to the panel interview process .
    • April 2026 - Candidates will be notified of the outcome of the interview by this date.
