    The Position

    Why join the Contra Costa County Health Services Department ?
    Contra Costa Health (CCH) has 1 opening for a full-time Database Administrator assigned primarily to the CCH Information Technology Unit located in Martinez, CA.
    The Database Administrator is primarily responsible for performing duties to monitor and to fine tune database systems for health and performance; to configure and maintain systems for high availability; to ensure proper security and backups; and to establish procedures to report to and alert appropriate parties of events happening on databases. In addition, the individual selected will create and monitor enterprise-level jobs for data extraction, transformation and loading, and document and communicate changes in database models, review data models developed by other information system professionals and recommend modifications, participate in system analysis, design, and implementation, and advise and consult with application programmers and system analysts during system analyses. Microsoft SQL Server experience is preferred, though experience with other similar database management systems is acceptable.

    The employment list established as a result of this examination may remain in effect for six (6) months. In addition, this is a countywide classification and this list may be used to fill future vacancies in any of the County Departments.

    What you will typically be responsible for:
    • Advanced Microsoft SQL Server Administration with knowledge of maintaining and performance tuning of sql databases and code.
    • Knowledge of importance and skillset in securing databases using encryption techniques.
    • Knowledge of Powershell and Python scripting required to manage large datasets via Snowflake and other external data sources.
    • ETL and Advanced SSIS Development.
    • Managing Github and Azure DevOps with the ability to offer support to staff on integration with Visual Studio using Copilot, and resolving issues around GIT.
    • Administration of PowerBI OnPrem and SQL Server Reporting Services.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in information systems, computer science or a closely related field.

    Experience: Four years full-time or its equivalent experience performing database administration and/or computer programming analyst duties. Two years of the required experience must have included database administration duties.

    Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years.

    Desirable Qualifications:
    • Project management experience
    • Experience in the Database upgrades of various platforms including design, programming, implementation, analysis and maintenance of database management systems
    • Database certifications for SQL server, Oracle or any other Database system


    Selection Process

    1. Application Filing and Evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application, applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.

    2. Online Video Interview Assessment: Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an online video interview assessment. The assessment will measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the Database Administrator classification. In the assessment, candidates must achieve an average passing score of 70% or higher on each of the competencies, as well as an overall passing score of 70% or higher. These may include, but are not limited to: Critical Thinking, Professional & Technical Expertise, Adaptability, Professional Integrity & Ethics, Self-Management, and Involving Others (Engaging Teams).

    The Database Administrator online interview assessment is tentatively scheduled to take place via computer (remotely) the week of March 23, 2026.

    The video assessment will be administered remotely using a computer or mobile device such as a tablet. You will need access to a reliable internet connection to take the assessment, as well as computer or mobile device with a camera. It is not recommended to take the assessment using a cell phone due to the writing component.

    The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.
