    Description

    Promotes the Adoption and Foster programs in an effort to increase pet adoptions. Deals directly with the public to assist and educate citizens on pet selection, pet care and owner responsibility. Manages the adoption and foster programs. Requires the knowledge of County ordinances and State laws relating to animals. Position will require shift rotations, weekends, holidays and some nights.

    Examples of Duties

    • Participates in the development of policies and procedures to enhance the Adoption and Foster Care programs.
    • Establishes programs to enlist potential foster volunteers to include marketing, onboarding, training, and providing ongoing support to individual fosters and foster families.
    • Designs and maintains initial kits for new fosters; and provides ongoing supplies and equipment to meet the needs of the animals in foster care.
    • Provides verbal and written information to the general public regarding adoption procedures, animal related laws and animal welfare.
    • Assists in the development of materials to educate the public on care and treatment of animals.
    • Deals with the public fairly and tactfully.
    • Assists with the planning, organizing and coordination of special events that will promote adoptions and identifies future foster participants.
    • Approves animals to be moved from restricted classifications into being available for adoption.
    • Works closely with department staff.
    • Recognizes signs of stress or disease in animals and reports any sick, injured or death of animals within the shelter to the appropriate supervisor and medical staff.
    • Participates in the handling, grooming and/or selection of animals to be offered for adoption and/or foster.
    • Inoculates and provides minor first aid as needed.
    • Maintains records and prepares written reports on animals that are adopted, fostered or redeemed.
    • Establishes and maintains records on any donated supplies, food, equipment and cash donations.
    • Establishes and maintains supplies and equipment to be given out through the adoption program.
    • Oversees community programs that may distribute services to the community.
    • Ensures all adoption fees or other donated funds received are promptly recorded and submitted following financial policies.
    • Works closely with veterinarians, animal welfare organizations and other government and non-profit organizations.
    • Responds to disasters and emergencies as directed.
    • Provides care and maintenance of equipment and facility.
    • Maintains adoption and donations area, and other locations under their control in a neat and orderly manner.
    • Answers email inquiries, phones and two-way radios promptly.
    • Assists in the feeding and care for sheltered animals including confined animals.
    • Prepares a weekly list of center supplies and food needed for the adoption and foster care side of animal services.
    • Oversees the “Doggy Day Out” program including marketing, interacting with participants, and assessing the success of each outing.
    • Serves periodically as the designated “Shelter Supervisor” on assigned weekends.
    • Operates a vehicle, a variety of equipment, which may include a computer, printer, telephone, calculator, copier, fax machine and other office equipment.
    • Attends and remains at work regularly and adheres to policies and procedures regarding absenteeism and tardiness. Provides adequate notice to higher management with respect to vacation time and leave request.

    Typical Qualifications

    Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplementedby three (3) years of hands on (adoptions, supervising volunteers, promoting adoption services) experience in the area of animal care in a shelter/center environment; two (2) years of direct public customer service or an equivalent combination of related training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid State Driver’s License.

    • Knowledge of procedures, with regard to animal care, health and disease.
    • Knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of County and Governmental agencies.
    • Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.

    • Ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required.
    • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.

    • Knowledge of the terminology and various professional languages used within the Department.
    • Ability to maintain effective relationships with co-workers, personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation.
    • Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.

    Work Environment:
    • Works inside and outside in center and shelter environment.

    • Ability to work effectively despite exposure to weather conditions of heat and cold, wetness, humidity, machinery hazards, electrical currents, smoke/dust, odors, dirt/pollen, dangerous animals, traffic hazards, and noise extremes.
    • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry.
