    TWO (2) SENIOR RISK MANAGEMENT INTERNS IN THE FINANCE DIVISION.

    (This is an at-will position)

    Hourly Wage: $26.86

    The Team:

    The Port of Long Beach's Finance team is a dynamic group dedicated to ensuring the financial health and sustainability of one of the busiest ports in the nation. Committed to transparency and efficiency, this team manages a diverse portfolio that includes accounting, budgeting, financial planning and analysis, grants management, and risk management. With a focus on innovative financial solutions, they support the Port's mission by optimizing resources, driving investment opportunities, and enhancing overall operational effectiveness. Collaborating closely with other departments, the Finance team plays a crucial role in shaping the future of the Port while fostering economic growth in the region.

    This is an unclassified (Non-Civil Service) position. Non-career positions typically average 20 hours per week, up to 29 hours a week , for a total of 1600 hours in a year for a maximum of two (2) years . Flexibility is offered within typical business hours. The assignment may end at any time, but under no circumstances will it extend beyond two years.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    The Role:

    Under general supervision and reporting directly to the Assistant Director of Finance, the Senior Risk Management Interns support the review of leases, permits, and contracts to ensure insurance requirements are met and analyze insurance documents for compliance and risk exposure. They will assist with maintaining insurance and tenant data, tracking policy expirations, and monitoring insurer standards, while also contributing to special risk-analysis projects. The role is highly collaborative and customer-focused, giving a hands-on experience working with city departments, tenants, and insurance professionals while learning how risk management operates in a real-world setting.

    How you get to contribute:

    • Monitor ongoing insurance compliance for leases, contracts, and other agreements, and take appropriate action to resolve issues or escalate issues as needed
    • Assist with planning, scheduling, and monitoring ongoing and future projects.
    • Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing statistical and technical data related to overall risk management
    • Track project deliverables and help prepare progress reports, risk assessments, and other correspondence.
    • Support the development of technical documentation, cost estimates, contracts, and databases.
    • Participate in meetings, record notes, and facilitate communication among Port staff, consultants, and key stakeholders.
    • Maintain records and update files.
    • Assist with interpreting complex written information such as data, contracts, regulations, and legislation.
    • Build and maintain strategic relationships internally and externally, demonstrating prompt, courteous, and high-quality customer service.
    • Maintain a positive, professional tone in all communication with internal teams, city staff, and external partners or vendors.
    • Conduct special projects and perform other duties as required.


    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program at a college or university with status as a junior or senior OR currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program. Recent graduates (within the last 12 months at the time of application) are also encouraged to apply.
    • A major in Risk Management, Actuary, Public Administration, Finance, Business Management, or a closely related field is preferred.

    • Proficient in English with excellent grammar, clarity, and tone.
    • Basic knowledge of risk management, insurance, project management, finance, and analysis is desirable.
    • Understanding of terminology related to maritime and local government contracts is desirable.
    • Skilled in Microsoft Office tools, especially Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams, required.
    • Strong ability to prepare accurate, concise records, reports, and documentation.
    • Strong organizational and planning skills; able to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
    • Analytical mindset with the ability to research, work with complex data sets, and present findings using charts, graphs, and other visuals.
    • Comfortable handling sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
    • Strong interpersonal skills; able to work independently and collaboratively across all levels of the organization.
    • Committed to excellent customer service, with a proactive, diplomatic, and flexible approach to solving internal and external client needs.
    • Team-oriented and adaptable, with the ability to stay calm under pressure and take initiative when priorities shift.


    SPECIAL NOTE

    This is an unclassified, "at-will" position. The appointed candidate will serve at the discretion of the Port of Long Beach and can be terminated at any time.
