    Our department provides a variety of financial services and programs. Austin Financial Services (AFS) serves residents, vendors, and City departments.

    Our mission is to serve as a trusted steward of public resources with integrity and accountability to ensure a fiscally sound city.

    Our staff supports a wide variety of financial processes, including preparing the annual budget and annual fiscal report, procurement processes, franchise agreements, real estate transactions, and overseeing the City’s investment portfolio and debt management.

    Job Description:

    IT Database Administrator

    Purpose:

    This position designs, administers, maintains, secures, and improves performance of databases.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    • Creates databases and database objects, such as tables, indexes, views, triggers, and stored procedures.
    • Loads databases, reorganizes as necessary, and assists in monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolving operational and performance-related database issues.
    • Executes the procedures necessary to save, retrieve, and recover databases from hardware and software failures.
    • Configures and implements database network connectivity working with the required technical teams.
    • Ensures data integrity and data security.
    • Maintains data standards, prepares, and develops database documentation, procedures, and definitions for data dictionaries.
    • Creates test database environment for applications section, including the creation of necessary libraries and procedures.
    • Assists with the installation of database software and with analyzing, designing, and implementing databases.
    • Assists with designing and maintaining database structures.
    • Assists in developing and implementing standards.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of industry and department best practices, requirements and policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of computer programming, system design, computer operations, systems and procedures.
    • Knowledge of database structures and theories.
    • Knowledge of current database technologies.
    • Knowledge of Oracle and SQLServer database tools, environments and query languages (SQL, TSQL).
    • Skill in developing reports and cross references from the data dictionary.
    • Skill in data modeling.
    • Skill database debugging, testing and troubleshooting techniques.
    • Ability to write Extraction, Transform and Load (ETL) or SSIS tasks for the Extraction, Transformation or Loading (ETL) process.
    • Ability to gather, assemble, correlate, and analyze facts.
    • Ability to perform a root cause analysis.
    • Ability to assess future information needs so that the databases can evolve in an appropriate manner.
    • Ability to accurately identify/determine customer needs and take appropriate actions and/or steps to address identified needs.
    • Ability to recognize, value, and include different perspectives, experiences, approaches, and cultures in achieving organizational goals.
    • Ability to gain and maintain the trust and confidence of others and the organization through consistency and reliability.
    • Ability to give, receive, or share thoughts, ideas, perspective, and data to create shared understanding.
    • Ability to define, analyze, and find solutions for difficult or complex problems.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to the job, plus two (2) years of experience in a related field.
    • Experience may substitute for education for up to four (4) years.


    Licenses and Certifications Required:
    • None


    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience with Oracle Databases
    • Experience with Snowflake
    • Experience writing Oracle SQL, PL/SQL, and Unix scripting.
    • Experience with Data Warehousing
    • Experience in Data Integration and ETL
    • Ability to travel to more than one work location


    Notes to Candidate:

    Position Overview:

    This position will be within the City’s Financial Services IT group, which is responsible for the management and support of the City’s financial, payroll, and timekeeping systems, databases, internal and external web applications, desktop, and network support. This position will require the applicant to work cohesively in a teleworking team environment. Supporting custom applications and interfaces. Also, supporting the central payroll, timekeeping, and financial and accounting applications.

    Pay Range:

    $80,490.00 - $107,310.00

    Hours:

    Monday - Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

    This position is primarily remote; however, you must come into the office anytime it is required.

    City Government

    The City of Austin is a progressive, full-service municipal organization operating under the Council-Manager form of government. Austin has a 10-1 council system with an at-large Mayor and Council Members that represent ten districts. The Mayor and Council Members may serve in their respective seats for four years with a maximum of two consecutive terms.
