JOB SUMMARYThe Sanitarian performs environmental health inspections and investigations to protect public health and ensure compliance with City and State health regulations. This position responds to complaints, enforces health codes, and maintains accurate records to support safe and sanitary conditions throughout the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe following list highlights the main responsibilities of this position. While it covers the core tasks, it may not include every duty that could be assigned. Employees may be asked to take on other responsibilities as needed to support the team and department.
- Conduct inspections of food service operations, day care facilities, swimming pools, streams, private water wells, and pollution abatement areas.
- Prepare and maintain inspection reports and related documentation.
- Respond to and investigate environmental health complaints; identify violations and enforce City and State health regulations.
- Utilize computer systems to enter and manage inspection data.
- Respond to emergency callouts and assist the Police and Fire departments as needed.
- Perform inspections during nights and weekends for temporary events.
- Maintain departmental equipment and perform vehicle checks.
- Respond to mosquito complaints and apply larvicide or pupacide to stagnant water areas as necessary.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS - Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to obtain Registered Sanitarian in Training within 6 months.
- Valid driver’s license and clean record required; Texas driver’s license within 3 months if out-of-state.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - One (1) - two (2) years of experience in environmental health or sanitation.
- Licensed Registered Sanitarian by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
COMPETENCIES AND ENVIRONMENT KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - Ability to read and interpret environmental health regulations, municipal codes, and departmental policies.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to maintain positive working relationships with City departments, outside agencies, community groups, and the public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 pounds rarely and 20 pounds regularly. Subject to vision constantly; standing, walking, handling, fine dexterity, balancing, hearing, and talking frequently; sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, bending, twisting, climbing, and foot controls occasionally; kneeling, crouching, and crawling rarely.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Work involves occasional exposure to variable and/or extreme weather conditions, heavy machinery, hazardous chemicals, unsanitary conditions, infectious diseases, and potentially angry members of the public. Personal protective equipment such as gloves, boots, hair restraints, and eye protection may be required. This is a
safety-sensitive role.
