    Surveyor I/II (Field)

    SALARY INFORMATION

    Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

    OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
    This recruitment is being held to establish an open eligible list to fill current and future Surveyor I/II vacancies within OC Public Works. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications throughout the County of Orange.

    SALARY RANGE (HOURLY)

    Surveyor I: $33.76 - $45.51

    Surveyor II: $39.74 - $53.55

    THE OPPORTUNITY
    The Surveyor I position is located within the Field Services area of OC Construction and will perform specialized field work while operating surveying instruments. This position is the entry-level classification in the Surveyor series and performs less complex boundary/annexation duties and assists the Surveyor II and Surveyor III with land surveying duties. Incumbents in the field are expected to learn how to operate surveying equipment to measure and record distances, elevation levels, and angles.

    The Surveyor II position is located in the Field Services area of OC Construction and will perform specialized field work while operating surveying instruments and providing technical instruction to team members. Assignments require considerable experience and knowledge as duties are often performed with independence. Incumbents in this class are responsible for coordinating the activities of the other survey party members, reading survey instruments and note taking, and acting as Party Chief in the Surveyor III's absence. If assigned to an office team, the Surveyor II independently performs difficult assignments in the analysis and preparation of topographical maps, boundary maps, parcel maps, records of survey maps, and/or geodetic survey calculations.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & CORE COMPETENCIES
    In addition to the minimum qualifications, the successful candidate will possess the following core competencies:

    TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
    • Basic experience and knowledge in field surveying practices and techniques.
    • Basic principle knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
    • Basic knowledge of laws, rules and regulations regarding subdivision of land, boundary locations, mapping and survey practices.
    • General knowledge on how to read and interpret civil engineering plans, maps, specifications, legal descriptions, survey field data and survey records.
    • Prepare drawings and tracings from survey notes and other information for topographic, cross sections and detail drawing from survey work.
    • Maintenance of complex precision surveying instruments and equipment.

    ANALYSIS & PROBLEM SOLVING
    • Perform data analysis using the principles of algebra, geometry, trigonometry.
    • Ability to recognize potential issues and take effective corrective action.
    • Demonstrate great judgment skills when analyzing the scope of projects.

    COMMUNICATION
    • The incumbent will be able to demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with engineers, developers, contractors and inspectors.
    • Ability to convey project findings to others in a clear and concise manner.
    • Ability to compose and prepare complex technical reports and correspondence.

    RECRUITMENT PROCESS

    Structured Oral Interview
    (Weighted 100%): Candidates will be interviewed and rated by a qualification appraisal panel of job knowledge experts. Only the most successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list.
    Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure.

    Eligible List

    Once the assessment has been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
