    The City of Fort Worth Park & Recreation department is recruiting for seasonal positions to work with our 2026 Camp Fort Worth and Mobile Recreation summer day camp programs. We are looking for experienced and creative Literacy Support Specialists who enjoy working with students in a fast-paced environment, encouraging them to read, inspiring them to work toward reading at the next level, and having fun while achieving their goals! Camp Fort Worth and Mobile Recreation are summer camp programs located in 21 community centers and 4 schools throughout the City of Fort Worth.

    Multiple Literacy Support Specialist positions are available with the City of Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department. This position will work a maximum of 30 hours weekly, dictated by their site and student needs.

    The Literacy and Reading Instruction Program are embedded in Camp Fort Worth and serves students 5 - 12 years old.
    • Attendance and participation at pre-season orientation is required. Orientation will be held June 1 st - June 5 th.
    • The 2026 Camp Fort Worth summer program operates from June 8 th - July 31 st. Camp hours are 7:30a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
    • The Mobile Recreation summer camp operates from June 8 th - July 24 th . Camp hours are 9:00a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
    • The position allows a maximum of 30 hours worked per week (this is a seasonal position and is not eligible for benefits)
    • The Literacy Program is built on 45 minutes of reading/literacy instruction daily, focusing on the 6 best practices of reading instruction: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and oral language development.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in education or related field
    • Six months teaching experience in a specialty area (reading instruction, early learning, or elementary education)
    • Valid Texas Driver's License

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Three years of classroom experience
    • Strong literacy instruction foundation
    • Experience with children 5 - 12 years old
    • Certified through TEA and/or one of the Basic Core classes such as, English, Writing or History
    • ESL knowledge/experience

    The Literacy Support Specialist's job responsibilities include:
    • Teach reading instruction at age-appropriate levels; facilitate educational programming through a variety of lessons/activities/games
    • Plan and present course content; prepare outlines of covered material and submit it for approval to supervisor/coordinator
    • Select appropriate materials for teaching assignments; arrange the use of audio/visual equipment or teaching aids when applicable
    • Plan activities that are directly associated with literacy development
    • Monitor, collect, track, and verify accurate records for reporting purposes
    • Monitor and evaluate the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of assigned programs; work alongside key personnel for continuous improvement of programs and services
    • Adhere to assigned work schedules as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensure all behaviors comply with the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations
    • Willingness to work in other areas of summer programming as needed
    • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with students, parents, program staff, and other Literacy Support Specialists

    Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking and repetitive motions.

    Sedentary Work - Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met

    Medical Program

    Vacation

    Available on the first day of employment, the city provides employees with paid holidays, including two personal holidays.

    Wellness Program

    The city’s Healthy Challenge Wellness Program rewards all full-time, benefit-eligible employees on the city’s health insurance. The Healthy Challenge Program utilizes a points system. Participants may earn points throughout the year (Jan. 1-Dec. 15) for completing specific program activities and participants can redeem points at the end of the year for a cash reward. By participating, individuals can earn $150, $200 or $250 by accumulating program points.
