DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:This counselor will be a member of the General Counseling department, which employs full-time and associate faculty. Under the direction of the Dean of Students, the counselor will work with students in the development and updating of individual educational plans, identifying educational majors and providing guidance and personal counseling as needed. Counselors work with the general population and with targeted student groups, transfer, and special student populations (international, Puente, Umoja, ESL, under-represented, veterans, student-athletes, career, etc.).
POSITION DUTIES:In addition to the responsibilities of the representative duties below, the specific position is also responsible for:
- Developing abbreviated and comprehensive Student Educational Plans.
- Assisting in the planning and implementation of the college-wide enrollment process.
- Keeping current with developments and changes in the field of academic, career, personal, and crisis counseling.
- Creating appropriate multimedia resources, handouts, and written materials for all educational related activities.
- Working with targeted student groups, transfer, and special student populations (international, under-represented, veterans, student-athletes, etc.).
- Maintaining current knowledge of transfer-specific requirements as well as local college programs and requirements.
- Delivering presentations related to group workshops, classroom-settings, and community events.
- Maintaining digital literacy and proficiency relevant to advising and counseling students.
- Supporting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion across the campus community.
- Assisting students in finding appropriate college and community resources to resolve problems and crises, which supports student success and retention.
All Counselors responsibilities represent a forty-hour week (199 days). The responsibilities of all Counselors include but are not limited to the following:
A. Job Specific - Provide academic, vocational, and personal counseling to students on an individual basis.
- Provide group counseling for the accomplishment of specific objectives.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of registration, including new student orientation.
- Assist students with forms, petitions, and appeals.
- Assist in connecting students to resources, agencies, and services.
- Begin appointments promptly and be well-prepared for sessions.
- Provide clear and concise information regarding academic requirements.
B. Professional Growth and Currency - Maintain currency with developments and changes in the counseling field.
C. Area or Departmental Responsibilities - Communicate with the various instructional divisions, the administration, and the staff of the College.
- Communicate and conduct outreach with the high schools served by the College.
- Develop and assess student learning outcomes.
- Assist other full-time, part-time, and/or new counselors, including training.
- Attend assigned meetings.
- Maintain knowledge of College, Area, and Department policies and procedures.
- Other related duties as assigned.
D. College Wide Service - Serve on College committees, workgroups, and project teams.
- Serve as a sponsor to student clubs and organizations.
- Participate in faculty/college governance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling; OR
- The equivalent (Applicants wishing to be considered for employment under District equivalency standards must submit a detailed statement explaining how you possess the equivalent to the minimum qualifications.)
(NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: - Licensed Counselor, Clinical Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist or Psychologist or currently seeking licensure.
- Experience working in a college or educational setting.
- Completion of Masters' level counseling coursework and practicums (Individual, Group and Family).
- Knowledge and use of technology in counseling.
- Experience counseling and supporting students/clients regarding academic and personal issues that may be barriers to their academic success and continued enrollment.
- Experience with presenting workshops and presentations in the classroom and to the local community.
- Experience counseling students/clients in support of their career exploration, goal-setting, and decision-making.
- Experience and commitment to working with diverse and underrepresented student and community populations.
- Experience providing crisis counseling and services.
- Experience with program development.
