    This is a seasonal up to 40 hours per week opportunity! As a Missoula County employee, you will be part of a team that is committed to positively impacting the community. The rate of pay for this position is $20.93 per hour.

    The Missoula County Ecology and Extension Department is seeking an EDUCATION ASSISTANT/YOUTH CREW LEADER to join their team. This position assists the Weed Education Coordinator from April to August in the preparation, scheduling and presentation of classroom and outdoor field trips; and coordinates and leads a group of 4 high school students in natural resource restoration projects with participating land managing agencies for the Youth in Restoration program through the Missoula County Weed District.

    Representative Examples of Work

    Schedules, prepares supplies and makes arrangements for Leave No Weed presentations and field trips. Prepares materials for Nature Walk Week. Presents Leave No Weed programs to school classes of varying levels. Leads groups of students on outdoor field trips, volunteer workdays and interpretive walks. Maintains a current knowledge of issues including valley bioregional flora and fauna, non-native species invasion, and the economic and ecological impacts of weed control. Leads nature walks, discussions and provides information. Leads discussions on integrated management techniques of noxious weeds and the principles of the Leave No Weeds program. Leads high school youth crew members on daily restoration activities, volunteer workdays and interpretive walks. Participates in hands-on restoration efforts in the county including use of mechanical and biological noxious weed controls; seeding and planting; and collecting native seeds and cones. May assist other resource programs with fence removal; trail maintenance; construction of protective vegetation enclosures; and brush barriers. May assist with data collection using GPS units. Delivers noxious weed education programs to community groups or other audiences.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Requires high school graduation or GED, and completion of at least twelve (12) college semester credits. Course work most applicable to the position will be in Forestry, Natural Resources, Biology, Botany, natural resources or other plant sciences.
    • Bachelor’s degree desired.
    • Requires at least one year of experience working in natural resources.


    Physical/Environmental Demands

    Work schedule and location may vary. Some work is performed in the weed office and may include travel to schools and other venues. Works outdoors in various weather conditions; walks over rough or uneven terrain; requires climbing, bending and stooping and occasional lifting and carrying, 20-25 lbs.

    Excellent Medical Health Benefits- Group health benefits, including dental and vision coverage, are available to eligible County employees. The medical health benefits premium is covered for full-time employees. The County contribution is pro-rated on hours paid for part-time employees. The employee pays the premium portion for dependent coverage. Family health benefits coverage is $258.00 per pay period.

    Medical deductible is $500 for an individual and $1,000 for a family.

    Flexible Benefits Plan- Pre-tax out-of-pocket medical expenses and day care expenses.

    Voluntary Life Insurance Coverage, Long and Short-Term Disability, Critical and Accident Insuranceare offered through Mutual ofOmaha.

    Public Employees Retirement System- Montana public employees of the state, university system, local governments and certain employees of school districts are covered by the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). New members to the PERS have an opportunity to choose between two retirement plan options: the Defined Benefit Plan or the Defined Contribution Plan.

    Sheriffs' Retirement System (SRS)- A public pension plan for all Montana Sheriffs hired after July 1, 1974 and Detention Officers hired after July 1, 2005.

    Supplemental Retirement Benefitsare offered through Valic or Nationwide.

    Sick Leave- Full-time employees accrue 7.38hours per month and are eligible to use sick leave once you have been an employee for 90 days.The accrual is pro-rated for part-time employees.

    Vacation Leave- Full-time employees accrue 9.24 hours per month and are eligible to use leave after continuous employment for a period of 6 full months. The accrual is pro-rated for part-time employees.

    Holidays- The County observes eleven legal holidays in even numbered years and ten legal holidays in odd numbered years.

    Paid Parental Leave (PPL)-In recognition of the importance of bonding and care of a newborn child or a child placed for adoption, Missoula County 6 continuous weeks of PPL to eligible full-time employees that have been with the county for 180 days. The hours are pro-rated for part-time employees.
