    CAREER DESCRIPTION

    CADASTRAL TECHNICIAN TRAINEE

    OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

    This recruitment is being held to establish an open eligible list to fill current and future Cadastral Technician Trainee positions.

    THE OPPORTUNITY
    The Cadastral Technician Trainee is the trainee level in the Cadastral Technician series. Incumbents in this class work under training conditions to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for promotion to Cadastral Technician I. There is no permanent status in the trainee class. Incumbents who have not promoted prior to the end of the probationary period will have failed probation.

    Under close supervision, the Cadastral Technician Trainee performs routine cadastral mapping duties and learns to use a Computer-Aided Drafting/Geographic Information System (CAD/GIS) in the preparation and maintenance of County maps related to property boundaries of various kinds, and performs related work as assigned.

    Examples of duties include:
    • Learning to apply mapping fundamentals and to use a CAD/GIS system for the revision and preparation of maps concerning boundary changes, annexations, municipality changes, new or changed assessment districts, etc.
    • Locating deeds and other documents related to the chain of title and property description.
    • Catalog and file deeds and other reference materials.
    • Record changes in street names and addresses as well as record and file proposed tract maps and other records as required.
    • Perform area calculations as required using a variety of methods.
    • Operate a variety of office equipment, including computer, plotter, scanner, printer, copier, calculator, fax machine, drafting tools, etc.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.


    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS & CORE COMPETENCIES

    Option 1
    Six (6) months of experience in mapping, GIS, surveying, and/or Computer-Aided Drafting, which would have applied or developed the required knowledge and abilities listed above.

    Option 2
    Six (6) units of college-level coursework in mapping, GIS, surveying, and/or Computer-Aided Drafting.

    The ideal candidate will also possess experience with the following core competencies:

    Technical Knowledge
    • Utilizing a CAD/GIS system to create and update maps.
    • Performing Cadastral mapping to prepare and maintain accurate property maps.
    • Plotting maps from legal descriptions.
    • Reading and interpreting complex legal property descriptions to identify and locate property boundaries.
    • Applying mathematical computations to calculate bearings, distances, and areas to determine property locations.

    Communication Skills
    • Preparing correspondence to deliver updates, status on project, or information to stakeholders, managers, and colleagues.
    • Presenting information clearly and in an organized manner to diverse populations.
    • Composing documents, organizing data, and responding appropriately to all parties.

    Attention to Detail
    • Reading and interpreting complex legal property descriptions carefully.
    • Following oral and/or written instructions.
    • Preparing routine records and reports with accuracy.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    License/Certification
    Possession of valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, is required for most positions.

    RECRUITMENT PROCESS
    Human Resource Services (HRS) will screen all application materials to identify qualified candidates. After screening, qualified candidates will be referred to the next step and notified of all further procedures applicable to their status in the process.

    Proctored Assessment(s) (100% Weighted)
    Candidates whose applications reflect the most job-related experience and training will be invited to an in-person proctored assessment. Only the most qualified candidates will be referred to the next step. All candidates will be notified via email of their status in the process.

    Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedure listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure.

    Eligible List
    Once the assessment has been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies. Only the most successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list.
