    Overview

    The objective of Parks Technician II is to maintain and mow all the City's developed and underdeveloped parkland, facilities, right of ways, and beaches. This position requires the ability to train subordinates. The principal function of this position is to operate various types of machinery such as trucks, utility carts, trailers, tractors, zero turn mowers, operating weed-eaters, chain saws, brooms, shovels, picks, lopping shears, backpack blowers, backpack sprayers, pole saws, rakes and trash grabbers to achieve park maintenance standards. This position requires working knowledge of basic park maintenance functions to include best practices, irrigation repair, and equipment maintenance & repair.

    Responsibilities

    • Collect litter, large debris, animal carcasses, tree limbs from the parkland, facilities, right of ways and beaches

    • Sanitize restrooms and restock toilet paper, soap, hand towels

    • Empty trash cans on the beach into trash trucks

    • Operate a zero-turn riding mower, standup mower, push mower, tractors in different terrains/slopes

    • Safely load and unload mowers, and other equipment on trailers

    • Operate gas/electric equipment to weed eat and/or edge around sidewalks, fences, trees, shrubs, poles, signs, guardrails, inlets, meter boxes, alleys, blow grass clippings, and other miscellaneous debris off sidewalks, street curbs, parking lots and playgrounds

    • Operate gas/electric equipment to excavate earth using auger, skid steer

    • Conduct minor repairs to equipment offsite

    • Safely operate a work truck and trailer

    • Abide by City and department rules and regulations on operating city equipment

    • Properly hook up and detach a trailer by themselves and make sure the brake lights are operation properly

    • Able to drive the work truck with a trailer forward and reverse, as well at negotiating turns in a safe manner without damaging the trailer and tow hitch

    • Drive passenger vehicles, utility vehicles and maintenance equipment safely

    • Remove graffiti using chemicals or a pressure washer

    • Apply paint to walls, ceilings, poles, playgrounds, meter boxes, accessories, and any other assigned locations using a roller/paint brush

    • Excavate land using shovels, augers, and backhoes

    • Install new or transplant plant life such as trees, shrubs, and flowers, application and distribution of compost and mulch by hand, hand tools or powered equipment

    • Lead staff assigned to complete tasks assigned by Park Operations Technicians III and Park Operations Supervisors

    • Report on all injuries from assigned staff to Park Operations Supervisors

    • Maintain preventive maintenance logs and submissions for fleet repairs

    • Laison between department and citizens

    • Ensure assigned staff returns and secure all issued equipment

    Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

    • Non-Exempt - Full-Time

    • Mowing/Construction Crew: Non- Rotating 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM. Must be available to work additional hours as needed

    • Tourist District: Rotating (1 st week) Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm (2 nd week) Tues/Wed/Thurs/Sat/Sun, 7:00am - 3:30pm

    • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

    • Positions and schedules are dependent on vacancies and department needs

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High School Diploma/GED

    • Two (2) years of experience

    Licenses and Certifications

    Required

    • A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

    Employment Testing

    Employment is contingent on passing any post-offer pre-employment screening as listed below:

    • Criminal Background Check: Yes

    • Motor Vehicle Record Check: Yes

    • Drug Screening: Yes

    • Physical Exam: Yes

    Basis of Rating

    A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
