    The Surveyor-In-Training performs and reviews professional land surveying work in adherence to established principles and practices. Assists in planning, coordinating, and directing surveying activities for the City in regards to electric distribution, transmission and substation and capital improvement projects, including related easement or fee acquisitions and construction activities. This position will be responsible for a full range of supervisory responsibilities, team meetings, training, mentoring, and coaching. The surveyor in training will work closely with Austin Energy surveyor technicians, Registered Professional Land Surveyors, engineering, design, civil, and construction teams. In addition, the position supports real estate staff in activities such as route analysis, easement research, encroachment identification, title matters, and customer service. This position will participate in project teams and other special project requests. The surveyor in training will lead survey work-group activities including the responsibility for work processes, work instructions, risk analysis, performance measures, and audits required to maintain AE International Organization Standards (ISO) certification. This position will help review surveys prepared internally and externally for quality assurance and quality control as a member of the survey team and participate in workflow management and other activities to promote continual quality improvements, and team building within the group. This position will created CAD drawings for Land Title Surveys, Standard Land Surveys, Construction Surveys and Topographic survey along with drafting Metes and Bounds per TSPS manual of practice effective date September 30, 2024.

    Position requires field work. Candidate chosen for this position will be required to operate company vehicles and meet the City of Austin driving standards.

    Job Description:

    Surveyor-In-Training (SIT)

    Purpose:

    Under the general direction of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS), this position is responsible for performing surveying and surveying related activities on behalf of the City.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    • Performs land surveys on behalf of the City.
    • Analyzes and reviews data gathered by field crews to ensure completeness and accuracy of survey information.
    • Uses survey data to generate coordinate files for use in determining property lines, benchmarks, topographical features, cross-sections, field notes, quantities of materials used, and metes and bounds descriptions.
    • Prepares scale drawings and plans for various construction projects, rights-of-way, easements, or boundary determinations.
    • Prepares and reviews easements, property descriptions, plans, ordinances, and agreements.
    • Researches City ownership, right-of-way, and other property issues.
    • Interprets maps, construction drawings, and legal descriptions.
    • Performs complex mathematical calculations using Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry.
    • Performs related work as assigned.

    May provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, training, and guidance to others.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods used in the measurement or determination of land boundaries, distances, elevations, areas, angles, and other features of the earth’s surface.
    • Knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
    • Skilled in using various Global Positioning Surveying (GPS) applications
    • Skilled in the collection, analysis, and reporting of complex numerical data.
    • Skilled in established and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
    • Ability to properly maintain complex engineering files and records.
    • Ability to read and interpret maps, plats, sketches, field books, and construction drawings.
    • Ability to adhere to the principles and practices of professional land surveying.
    • Ability to use CAD, GIS, and other survey-related software.
    • Ability to use a hand-held calculator.
    • Ability to conduct research with legal documents.


    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, Mathematics or a related field, plus one (1) year of experience under the direction of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS)
      OR
    • An Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field, plus (2) years experience under the direction of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS)
      OR
    • Graduation from an accredited high school, plus four (4) years of related experience under the direction of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS).


    Licenses and Certifications Required:

    Must be a certified Surveyor-In-Training (SIT) in good standing with the Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying (TBPLS).

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience with boundary surveying and boundary analysis.
    • Experience working in an electric department in the public utility industry.
    • Experience with Quality Assurance and Quality Control regarding metes and bounds and survey plats.
    • Experience and direct work in substation and/or transmission construction calculations and transmission construction layout.
    • Experience in creating survey plats in CAD for Land Title Surveys and creating metes and bounds descriptions for same.
    • Ability to travel to multiple work sites during scheduled hours

    Salary:

    $29.89 - $37.37/hr., depending on qualifications and experience.

    City Government
