ABOUT THE POSITIONFlex recruitment:There is currently one (1) vacant Building Permit Technician I/II in CDA. Candidates will be considered for the level they meet minimum qualifications.
Working under the lead direction of the Senior Building Permit Technician for the Community Development Agency in Building and Safety, the Building Permit Technician plays a key role in ensuring a smooth and efficient permit process. The ideal candidate will be a customer-focused, detail-oriented professional with some knowledge of building codes, construction practices, and/or permitting processes. They will be skilled at assisting the public with applications, reviewing plans for accuracy, calculating fees, and tracking permits through multiple departments. Strong communication, organization, and computer skills are essential, along with the ability to balance accuracy with excellent customer service. At the journey level (Permit Technician II), the candidate will demonstrate greater independence, initiative, and problem-solving in handling more complex permit reviews.
Hybrid schedule:CDA has embraced a
hybrid work schedule that considers that some duties of this position may be performed remotely. However, the successful candidate must be able to report to County facilities for meetings, work assignments, and/or disaster service work upon short notice, as needed and deemed appropriate. During the initial probationary period, the successful candidate may be required to work primarily onsite before establishing a hybrid work schedule.

QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of: - Basic building plans and construction practices and materials.
- General policies, procedures, rules, regulations, laws, codes and ordinances related to the work.
- Office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
Ability to:- Interpret, explain and apply policies, procedures, codes and ordinances affecting the acceptance and review of permit applications.
- Read, understand and/or check routine and simple building plans, maps, aerial photos, drawings, reports, applications, construction documents and specifications.
- Use computer applications related to the work.
- Perform basic mathematical computations.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Communicate effectively with the public and other staff.
- Organize work and meet deadlines.
- Establish effective working relationships with internal and external staff and customers.
- Maintain accurate files and records.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of education, training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to qualify is:
Building Permit Technician I: One year of clerical or administrative support experience in a related environment such as engineering, construction or public works providing technical information to the public and assistance to professional staff OR substantial coursework in building inspection, construction management, construction technology, urban planning, environmental science, architecture, engineering or a field closely related to the work.
Building Permit Technician II: One year of experience as a Building Permit Technician I or equivalent; or one year of experience dealing with construction or development application and permit processes through a public permitting entity.
Certificates and LicensesICC certification as a Building Permit Technician must be obtained within one year of appointment at the I level, and is required at time of appointment for the II level.
