Mohave County Public Works-Roads Division is looking to hire a CDL Trainer/Crew Leader located in Kingman, AZ.We are located at 3715 Sunshine Drive, Kingman, AZ.This position is for a CDL Trainer/Crew Leader (Commercial Driver’s License Instructor). The ideal candidate is an experienced trainer with strong communication skills, the ability to effectively assess student performance, and a thorough understanding of safety protocols and federal regulations.
The CDL Trainer/Crew Leader is responsible for delivering both classroom instruction and hands-on, behind-the-wheel training to individuals seeking to obtain or maintain their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). This role requires a commitment to safety, compliance, and student success.
Our MissionTo construct and maintain county roads accepted by the Mohave County Board of Supervisors as county highways, regularly maintained roads, or tertiary maintained roads, and to provide a safe and economical transportation system for the citizens of Mohave County. Mohave County Roads Division maintains 1,247.92 miles of gravel roads and 851.24 miles of paved road. Road maintenance starts in Kingman, AZ and goes all the way up to the Northern Arizona Strip.
Road Maintenance Worker Specialist -> Salary, Range 14 Steps 1-8 $22.15 - $27.23/hr.
CDL Trainer/Crew Leader -> Salary Range 17 Steps 2-8 $26.42 - $31.55/hr. Work 4 ten-hour shifts.
Monday-Thursday 5:00am-3:30pm (summer hours)
Monday-Thursday 6:00am-4:30pm (winter hours)
Weekends and holidays off.
Must pass drug screen post offer.
Work will be both office and field environments.
Occasional travel to assist crews in other areas of Mohave County.
County will cover room costs and per diem if situation requires overnight stay(s).
Must be able to travel throughout different county locations. Working conditions would include but not limited to: - Work outdoors performing moderate to strenuous manual labor in varying weather conditions, including strong winds, extreme heat to extreme cold temperatures.
- Travel will be mostly within Mohave County with travel to additional outlying county locations as needed, including Bullhead City, Lake Havasu City, Northern Arizona Strip, and other areas including attending required training or meetings, while operating a Mohave County provided vehicle.
- Work does require traveling throughout the county while operating a county vehicle in adverse traffic conditions, weather, terrain, and altitudes.
- Involves exposure to exhaust fumes, chemical fumes, acid, oil, grease, hazardous materials, and loud noises from equipment.
- This position requires an equal amount of time spent standing, walking, sitting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, bending, climbing ladders, and confined spaces.
- The ability to frequently be able to lift 25lbs up to 75lbs or more while operating heavy equipment.
Essential Job Functions- Work is subject to varying job site assignments and may be subject to call back, overtime, and irregular schedules including completion of work assignments on weekends and holidays.
- Assists in the preparation of performance evaluations; may recommend disciplinary actions; assists in approving time off; prepares work schedules and assignments; oversees the activities of assigned personnel; monitors reports and recordkeeping activities filed by assigned personnel for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to policy and procedure guidelines; instructs personnel in departmental policies, procedures and techniques; and provides training in the safe operation and servicing of required equipment, tools and materials in assigned area.
- Prepares complete, accurate reports, records and logs.
- Operates and utilizes various hand and power tools and equipment appropriate to assigned area.
- Adheres to safety procedures in work areas and in performance of work assignments.
- Cleans, maintains and services required equipment and tools used during performance of work assignments.
- Maintains an adequate supply of materials, equipment and tools required to fulfill work assignments.
As assigned to Roads Division: - Performs same duties and responsibilities as those required of a Road Maintenance Worker Senior and Road Maintenance Worker Specialist, plus duties that are more difficult and responsible within the Road Maintenance Worker series.
- Operates and services a variety of medium to heavy equipment in the performance of work assignments as required.
As assigned to Commercial Drivers License Instructor: - Prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences.
- Communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
- Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.
- Use relevant technology to support instruction.
- Observe and evaluate student’s performance and development.
- Provide appropriate feedback on training materials.
- Encourage, monitor, and prepare required reports on the progress of individual students.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development.
- Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, policies, and school regulations.
- Manage student behavior in the classroom and on the range by enforcing rules and procedures.
- Maintain daily attendance sheet.
- Communicate necessary information regularly to students and colleagues regarding student progress and student needs.
- Keep up to date with developments in subject area.
Minimum Qualifications Required Minimum Education, Experience, and Training: Road Maintenance Worker Specialist: Five-year experience work including.
- High School Diploma/GED (General Education Degree)
- Five (5) years’ actual operating experience of a specific piece of equipment utilized in the maintenance and repair of roads such as a Road Maintenance Worker or Road Maintenance Worker Senior or related field involving the operation of equipment utilized in the maintenance and repair of roads, streets, and property.
- Must possess the ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License within a six (6) month period of hire date.
- OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications.
CDL Trainer/Crewleader: Three-year experience work including.
- High School diploma/GED (General Education Degree)
- Three (3) years successful experience in the performance of journey or advanced journey level duties and responsibilities associated with the area assigned or when filled from outside
- Three (3) or more years of experience in an assigned area performing applicable journey or advanced journey level work.
- OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications.
As assigned to Commercial Driver’s License Instructor: - Theory and behind-the-wheel instructors must hold an appropriate class of CDL of the same (or higher) class including appropriate endorsement(s) to operate the CMV for which training is to be provided.
- Two (2) years of experience driving a commercial motor vehicle requiring the CDL (including appropriate endorsement(s) or two (2) years of experience as a behind-the-wheel commercial motor vehicle instructor.

- Fulfill physical requirements of work assignments to include occasional - frequent moderate lifting of 25 - 75 pounds, and operating equipment and performing manual labor in extreme hot or cold temperatures.
