GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Fort Leaton State Historic Site lies deep in the Chihuahua Desert of the Big Bend region in west Texas. This is a truly beautiful but harsh area. Summer days often well exceed 100 degrees and the park is located far from many amenities. The closest airport is about 4 hours away. Please carefully consider these factors when applying.
Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs entry-level building maintenance and construction work. Responsible for the overall maintenance, renovation, and restoration of Fort Leaton State Historic Site. Works closely with the Lead Maintenance Specialist and may supervise other seasonal staff including interns, and volunteer park hosts. Performs daily maintenance of facilities, exhibits, grounds, picnic areas, and campgrounds to include cleaning of restrooms, exhibit rooms, and office spaces. Maintains and operates all types of equipment including hand and power tools, mowers, tractors, and other equipment. Participates in safety program, special events, interpretative and visitor services. Responsible for effective coordination with Big Bend Ranch State Park and other staff on all matters affecting programs within the park. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.
NOTE: Position may fluctuate between full-time/part-time hours based on operational needs.
Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Education :
Completion of 8th grade.
Experience :
Experience in facilities, grounds, or equipment maintenance.
Licensure :
Must possess a valid State driver's license.

WORKING CONDITIONS :
Required to work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
This position will fluctuate between part-time and full-time status throughout the term of employment. Changing from part-time to full-time and vice versa may impact the amount of leave accrued, eligibility for longevity pay, and health insurance rates.
Required to respond to emergency situations.
Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions and rugged terrain.
Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.
May be required to operate a State vehicle.
Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays.
Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures.
