    Job Description:

    Training Specialist

    Purpose:

    Coordinates training activities to include development of curriculum and delivery of job specific training to meet departmental initiatives.

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    • Surveys various training techniques, materials, and commercial offerings to select the most appropriate process for the delivery of training.
    • Delivers targeted, audience-appropriate instructor-led training sessions.
    • Coordinates student and facility schedules for delivery of training, and maintains and prepares appropriate records of participation.
    • Develops written training materials, visual aids, and reference materials, including course curriculums.
    • Performs preproduction, production, and postproduction work on computer- and video- training materials that use computer and streaming audio-visual technologies for on-demand use.
    • Develops and administers assessments of staff skills for use in developing training strategies and curriculum, and effectiveness of delivery.
    • Conducts research or surveys to determine the effectiveness of training provided.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to the job, plus two (2) years of experience in a technical training environment.
    • Experience may substitute for the education up to the maximum of four (4) years.


    Licenses and Certifications Required:

    Licensing for specific disciplines may be required.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Class A or B Commercial Driver License (CDL) for a minimum of 2 years without any suspensions, revocations, or disqualifications or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
    • Knowledge of DOT commercial vehicle rules and regulations, and DPS CDL Compliance and Regulations.
    • Experience training other employees in an operational organization that involves heavy equipment or commercial vehicles
    • Experience with solid waste operations or large vehicle operations.
    • Experience delivering presentations and/or facilitating engaging training sessions.
    • Experience utilizing MS Office Suite, Workday, SharePoint, or any Learning Management Systems
    • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other Department and City employees
    • Ability to travel to more than one work location


    Notes to Candidate:

    Austin Resource Recovery (ARR) is an organization of 500 plus employees that provides residential curbside collection of trash, recycling, and composting to the residents of the Austin metropolitan area. Additional services include bulk and large brush collection, street sweeping, dead animal collection, and a drop-off center for hard-to-recycle items and household hazardous waste.

    The Training Specialist will support ARR’s Operational Training programs, including solid-waste heavy equipment training, First Aid/CPR, Defensive Driving, Commercial Driver License (CDL) Program, and other required courses. This position is responsible for delivering both classroom and hands-on training while also researching and applying best practices and alternative training methods. The role requires the use of the department’s Learning Management System (LMS), SharePoint, and training documents to process and manage training records.

    The Training Specialist is expected to maintain and enforce training standards for all ARR operational employees, ensuring compliance with equipment use requirements, departmental policies and procedures, and state and federal laws related to commercial vehicle and heavy equipment operations. The position also includes managing training attendance and maintaining ongoing communication and coordination with department leaders and trainees.

    This role works closely with other Training Specialists, Training Specialist Seniors, and the Program Compliance Coordinator to ensure consistency and quality across all training programs.

    Pay Range: $28.29 - $34.80 per hour. Your detailed and complete employment application will be used to evaluate your qualifications and determine your salary if you are selected for this position.

    Days & Hours: Monday - Friday; 5:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Employees may be required to work some early mornings, after hours, weekends, and special events due to business needs.
