ABOUT AUSTIN WATER

For over 100 years, Austin Water has been committed to providing safe, reliable, high-quality, and affordable water services to our customers.
Today, we serve over 1,000,000 people in the Austin metropolitan area, across more than 548 square miles.

The utility draws water from the Colorado River into three regional water treatment plants, Handcox, Davis, and Ullrich, which have a combined capacity of 335 million gallons per day.

Austin Water has two wastewater treatment plants, Walnut Creek and South Austin Regional, that can receive up to 150 million gallons per day of sewage to treat. Wastewater is cleaned into high-quality effluent that is safely returned to the Colorado River to augment environmental flows.

More than a billion gallons of this high-quality effluent are reclaimed each year for outdoor irrigation, industrial cooling, manufacturing, and other uses.

Austin Water consistently ranks among the best in the country when it comes to water quality. We also treat, return, and recycle wastewater in ways that protect environmental resources. Austin Water exceeds federal and state requirements for clean water and environmental compliance at our water and wastewater treatment plants.

Job Description:

Purpose:

• Under limited supervision and with Professional Engineering review, this position uses engineering knowledge to independently perform a variety of moderately complex engineering projects/assignments that are routine in nature but that may require adaptation or modifications from standard practices. Individuals will be capable of exercising engineering judgment within defined methods, procedures, and practices.
  

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

• Prepares and maintains design drawings, diagrams, charts, databases plans, and permits under the supervision of a professional engineer. Develops proposals for impacts and performing preliminary and final designs and/or prepares design criteria for assigned projects.
  
• Prepares specifications as it relates to the standardization and engineering policies and practices. Reviews and provides recommendations in the evaluation and implementation for job safety procedures.
  
• Prepares design criteria for assigned projects. Provides assistance in technical and financial inputs for project budget process.
  
• Plans for and sizes equipment.
  
• Reviews plans and development proposals for impacts, and performs preliminary and final designs for PE review.
  
• Assists in the preparation of standards, equipment specifications, design procedures, and test procedures.
  
• Coordinates and provides a variety technical information, under the guidance of a professional engineer, to customers by contacts with personnel to include inter- and intra-departmental administrative, engineering, and construction personnel; other government agencies; contractors; consultants; and the public to exchange information, coordinate work, answer questions, and respond to complaints.
  
• Uses computerized software programs, ink or pencil drafting to prepare drawings and maps to provide technical advice and guidance to assigned work or project.
  
• Prepares cost estimates/track expenditures, prepares cost estimates and engineering and feasibility reports and studies for projects. Prepares and/or provides assistance with preliminary contract documents, specifications, and plans. Assists in the preparation of final plans, specifications, special conditions and agreements and coordinates and oversees work of contractors, affected public agencies and utilities. Provides assistance with technical specifications for construction contracts. Inspects and monitors projects for compliance by reviewing work completed by contractors and monitoring compliance to specifications.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a related field, plus two (2) years of experience in engineering.
  

Licenses and Certifications Required:

• Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification in the State of Texas,
  

OR

• If certified in another state, must have the ability to obtain Texas EIT certification within six (6) months of employment.
  

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
  
• Experience in capital improvement project (CIP) planning and management, including working successfully with different city departments and governmental agencies in underground water, wastewater and reclaimed water pipeline relocation design and construction involving major roadway, transit-oriented improvements, and drainage infrastructure improvements.
  
• Experience in regularly interacting with different levels of personnel throughout an organization and adapting communication styles to meet the needs of internal and external stakeholders/ customers.
  
• Experience in working in a fast-paced environment, ability to multitask, and exhibit strong organizational skills.
  
• Experience in planning, organizing, and collaborating effectively with both internal and external stakeholders within an organization to meet business objectives.
  
• Experience in working on multiple projects simultaneously and reaching project milestones on time.
  
• Experience in communicating technical information to non-technical audiences
  

Notes to Candidate:

Position Overview:

• This position is part of the Mobility Team at Austin Water (AW), which oversees the impact of transportation and transit-oriented projects on AW’s water, wastewater, and reclaimed water pipeline infrastructure. These projects involve utility pipeline relocations and conflict mitigation associated with local and regional roadway/ highway improvements, transit-oriented developments, and at times drainage infrastructure related improvements. The team works on projects initiated and led by various governmental entities and agencies, including TxDOT, Travis and Williamson Counties, CTRMA, and the City of Austin's own Transportation Corridor Program and Project Connect Light Rail initiative. This role works in a fast-paced environment, coordinating continuously with other teams and divisions within AW, and with other City departments and external stakeholders throughout the planning, design, bid and construction phases for successful project completion. This is an exciting opportunity to work on some unique and complex utility pipeline relocation projects in the City of Austin.
  

Pay Range:

• $35.50 - $45.27 per hour
