DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS This position responsibility is to perform basic and intermediate traffic engineering studies, and written reports of traffic investigation findings. The position will perform specialized traffic studies to prepare as required. The position will also analyze data collected using traffic counters devices to prepare both paper and electronic records and with other duties as assigned.
This position deploys traffic counter devices to collect traffic data that will be used to analyze existing traffic conditions to promote safe vehicular and pedestrian movements. Investigates and analyzes traffic count requests from various sources. Provides technical support and will be assigned directly to meet the goals and objectives of the City-Wide Traffic Count Program.
Conducts field investigations and observations to determine possible traffic problems and conditions. Prepares a variety of reports, work orders and other communications. Researches past investigations, traffic actions and conditions. Responds to inquiries from general public, departments and other groups.
Specific duties of this position will include but are not limited to:
- Investigate and analyzes various traffic requests and complaints.
- Deploy and retrieve traffic counters
- Download and process traffic count data
- Analyze / Review traffic count data for discrepancies in traffic flow patterns.
- Upload the data into the traffic count data base.
- Conduct special Traffic studies as requested
WORKING CONDITIONS The position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc.
This is a Houston Public Works’ Emergency Management Position at the Tier III Level MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a high school diploma or a GED.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Six months of experience performing field work related to traffic or traffic signs/devices, or work related to traffic studies are required.
* An Associate’s degree or higher in Drafting, Construction Management or a field related to the work being performed may substitute for the education and experience requirements.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Requires a valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving.

- Able to handle multiple, competing, and changing priorities
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, including:
- Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint
- Strong interpersonal skills, team player attitude, and the ability to establish excellent working relationships at diverse levels
