    Wake County Animal Center has a career opportunity for you to be a super-hero to animals in need! As an Animal Welfare Technicians (AWTs) , you will work in a dynamic and encouraging environment and you will have the ability to make a positive impact in the lives of the animals and people of Wake County daily. This full-time position works a 4 day work week so you will get to enjoy an extra day off every week!

    The Animal Welfare Technicians (AWTs) play a vital role in our organization and the lives of all the animals who enter the Wake County Animal Center. This team is responsible for performing all intake procedures (both medical and administrative), determining the pathway for all the animals at WCAC or in WCAC foster homes, and population management. The members of this team have excellent skills related to time management, attention to detail, and maintaining a high level of service. The lives of the animals and the people in our community are impacted every day by decisions required of this position.

    AWTs and the Wake County Animal Center help approximately 11,000 to 12,000 animals in need every year. Our AWT team must be able to handle a variety of domesticated animals in a safe and humane manner. This requires staff members have a knowledge of dog and cat behavior and a willingness to adjust humbly their behavior and actions to provide as stress-free and compassionate an environment as possible, while performing all the necessary duties of the position. Animals who are in the care of the Wake County Animal Center or their foster homes are given vaccinations and preventative medication on a regular schedule by our AWTs. The AWTs are also tasked with the responsibility of obtaining the status of CET (or certified euthanasia technician) within a specified time limit via the Veterinary Division of the NC Department of Agriculture, as well as performing safe, humane euthanasia at the Center.

    About Our Team

    The Wake County Animal Center is an open-admission animal shelter operated by Wake County Government and on average takes in between 11,000 to 12,000 animals each year. We receive all stray, abandoned and surrendered pets in Wake County. The Center works in partnership with fosters, volunteers and local rescues, to treat and rehome thousands of homeless animals every year.

    The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

    • High school diploma or GED
    • Six months of experience in animal care or control
    • Certified Euthanasia Technician (CET) - Must pass test/exam to become certified within 6 months of employment
    • Certified Rabies Vaccinator (CRV) - Must pass test/exam to become certified within 6 months of employment
    • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

    Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

    • Three years of related animal care experience
    • Previous animal shelter experience
    • CET - Certified Euthanasia Technician - must be obtained within six months of employment
    • CRV - Certified Euthanasia Technician - must be obtained within six months of employment

    Hiring Range: 25.07 - 28.13

    Market Range: 25.07 - 31.18

    Emergency Service Worker Statement
