    The Job

    Land Use Services is seeking a knowledgeable and proactive Lead Fire Hazard Abatement Officer to support wildfire prevention across the county’s diverse and high-risk landscapes. This position plays a critical role in addressing the growing threats of wildfire, climate change, and pest infestation by developing vegetation management strategies that promote both public safety and environmental health.

    Key Responsibilities may include:
    • Plan and Implement Vegetation Management: Develop and execute site-specific vegetation management plans that balance fire risk reduction with ecological preservation. Evaluate vegetation types, assess risk areas, and determine appropriate treatment methods (e.g., pruning, thinning, removal).
    • Enforce Fire Safety Ordinances: Conduct property inspections to ensure compliance with fire hazard abatement and hazardous tree regulations. Issue notices and work directly with property owners to mitigate risks.
    • Lead Public Education Efforts: Coordinate community outreach and education campaigns focused on defensible space and proper vegetation maintenance to promote fire safety awareness.
    • Coordinate with Agencies and Stakeholders


    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must undergo a background check, which includes fingerprinting and a medical exam.

    License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.

    Minimum Requirements

    Candidates MUST meet ONE (1) of the Requirement Options to qualify.

    REQUIREMENT OPTION 1
    EDUCATION: A completed associate's degree from an accredited college or university in in fire technology/science, arboriculture, forestry, or environmental science -OR- International Society of Arboricultural (ISA) Certified Arborist Credential.

    EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience in fire hazard abatement, vegetation management/arboriculture, wildfire prevention, or fire and environmental safety. Experience must include enforcing fire hazards or safety regulations, conducting inspections for a public agency.

    REQUIREMENT OPTION 2
    EDUCATION: Certifications in Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190, S-290, S-390, S-490), Fire Fighter Type 1 Training , or Wildfire Mitigation Specialist .

    EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of experience in fire hazard abatement, vegetation management/arboriculture, wildfire prevention, or fire and environmental safety. Experience must include enforcing fire hazard or safety regulations and conducting inspections for a public agency.

    Desired Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will possess:
    • Knowledge of wildfire behavior, vegetation types, and ecological principles.
    • Experience interpreting and enforcing fire codes or related ordinances.
    • Strong leadership, communication, and public outreach skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with agencies, landowners, and community members.
    • Familiarity with local and state fire prevention strategies and environmental regulations.
