Position Summary The Basic Needs Program Assistant (SSP IA) is a trainee level appointment working under the lead direction of the Student Health, Counseling & Wellness Services (SHCWS), Basic Needs Resource Center Coordinator and with direct supervision from the Director of CARES(Crisis Assistance & Resource Education Support), Basic Needs & Wellness. During the trainee period, which is not to exceed 12 months, the Basic Needs Program Assistant is expected to develop and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities to function under general supervision at the SSP IB working level.
The incumbent will assist with mentoring and providing day-to-day guidance to paid student assistant interns and staff assigned to the Basic Needs Resource Center, under the supervision of professional staff. The Basic Needs Resource Center Program Assistant supports the work of the Basic Needs Resource Center Coordinator who is responsible for developing, implementing and managing programs and services supporting students’ basic needs, including but not limited to food security, housing stability, and financial resources. The Basic Needs Program Assistant will provide lead work direction to the student assistant staff who work in the Basic Needs Resource Center. The Basic Needs Program Assistant will promote the overall well-being and healthy lifestyle choices of students, within the university community. The Basic Needs Program Assistant will work collaboratively with the SHCWS staff, including CARES and Health, Wellness Promotion (HWP), and campus partners to promote the Basic Needs Resource Center, CARES services, and basic needs resources that promote campus policy, systems, and environmental changes to support student wellness.
The Basic Needs Program Assistant will assist the coordinators of basic needs focused grants that are managed by SHCWS and CARES staff, and will contribute to the design, development, and implementation of programs related to these grants, as directed. The Basic Needs Program Assistant supports the implementation of program goals and assists with developing campus collaborations and partnerships-under the guidance of professional staff-to address students’ basic needs insecurities. This includes utilizing best practices in basic needs, health, and wellness to create a supportive campus environment that promotes student well-being and academic success, reduces stigma and barriers to accessing services, and encourages positive health behaviors.
FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,150 per month - $4,300 per month; commensurate with the candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

Recruitment Type: Temporary (One-Year Trainee Appointment) - After 12 months of satisfactory performance, position may be eligible for extension through conversion to a probationary-status entry-level SSP IB classification.
Time Base : Full-Time
Work Hours: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.

Minimum Qualifications Knowledge and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the basic principles of individual and group behavior; research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting factual information; and the techniques and methods of interviewing. Ability to gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences and interviews; clearly express ideas and recommendations orally; write clear and concise reports; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and faculty.
Experience:
No prior experience is required; however, exposure to student services, peer education, health promotion, or wellness initiatives in a college setting is preferred.
Education:
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis

Preferred Qualifications Completion of one academic year Peer Health Educator student assistant internship position. Complete one or more years as a Peer Health Educator Lead Student Assistant. Ability to understand and navigate a dynamic campus culture with diverse populations Competency in cross-cultural communication Demonstrated success working on teams and supporting colleagues on collaborative initiatives Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advance notice CPR/BLS Certification
