The eligible list created from this recruitment may be used to fill Temporary/Extra-help and Permanent positions. Temporary/Extra-Help assignments are limited to 28 hours per week with a cap of 999 hours (or 960 hours for CalPERS retired annuitants) in a fiscal year and are not eligible for benefits. Extra-help appointments made from this eligible list may transition to permanent status, should vacancies arise.
Employees who are designated to use a second language in the normal course and scope of work will receive five percent (5%) bilingual pay.

Human Resources website.DEFINITIONTo perform semi-skilled and skilled construction and maintenance of County landscapes, parks, trails, open space, median areas, beaches, and lawn and garden areas; to perform painting, metal fabrication, sign installation, tree trimming and removal, and irrigation system calibration, testing, and modification; to perform maintenance and repair of tools and equipment; and to perform routine maintenance and general construction related to parks facilities.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis is the full journey level class within the Parks Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the entry level.
This class is distinguished from the Senior Parks Worker in that the latter performs complex and difficult work in the construction and maintenance of parks, trails, and open space with a high degree of skill and independent judgment, coordinates and schedules assigned projects, and exercises technical and functional supervision over crew members.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives general supervision from a Parks Crew Supervisor and may receive technical and functional supervision from a Senior Parks Worker and/or higher-level supervisory and management staff.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIESDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following: - Plant, cultivate, and irrigate lawns and flower beds; prepare soil for transplanting; mow and edge lawns; prune, trim, and remove trees, hedges, and shrubs; weed assigned areas; mix and apply fertilizer, pesticides, and herbicides.
- Install, maintain, and repair irrigation systems and components.
- Clean and clear grounds, playgrounds, and playing fields; clean walks, parking lots, and storm drains; dispose of trimmings and other debris; dig trenches and post holes either manually or with mechanical assistance; clean and maintain trails and beaches; maintain native vegetation.
- Inspect, service, repair, and maintain various types of grounds equipment, including mowers, rototillers, edgers, hedge trimmers, and other power-driven and mechanical equipment.
- Perform carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and masonry work, including welding, framing, rough carpentry and painting, pouring concrete, lighting and wiring, and repairing faucets, sinks, and toilets in parks facilities.
- Operate a variety of light and moderately heavy equipment, including excavators, skid steers, street sweepers, field tractors, boom trucks, stump grinders, and backhoes.
- Perform sanitation duties and maintenance of parks rest rooms, campsites, and picnic areas; perform minor playground equipment repair.
- Locate, assemble, install, and repair various signs related to parks, trails, and open space.
- Perform safety control, including setting up and removing signs, cones, and flagging.
- Perform pool maintenance and upkeep, including pumps, filters, and chemicals.
- Maintain records and other documents as required.
- May remove snow and ice on a seasonal basis.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, other County employees, and the public using principles of effective customer service.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSIt is the responsibility of applicants to identify in their application materials how they meet the minimum qualifications listed below.
Experience and Training: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Two (2) years of experience performing duties similar to a Maintenance Worker assigned to Parks with Placer County.
Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Required License or Certificate: - May need to possess a valid driver's license as required by the position. Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.
- Possession of a Qualified Applicator Certificate from California Department of Pesticide Regulation is desired.
- Possession of a valid Class A or B driver's license with air brakes and tanker endorsements may be required depending upon the position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of: - General use and purpose of materials, tools, equipment, and methods used in parks, trails, and open space maintenance.

- Service, repair, and adjust various mechanical and electrical groundskeeping equipment and tools.

SELECTION PROCEDURE Training & Experience Rating (100%) Based upon responses to the supplemental questionnaire, the applicant’s education, training, and experience will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula. Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the eligible list.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENTPrior to the date of hire, applicants must undergo a fingerprint test by the Department of Justice, pass a medical examination (which may include a drug screening and possibly a psychological evaluation), sign a constitutional oath, and submit proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to remain and work in the U.S. For some positions, applicants may also be required to submit proof of age, undergo a background investigation (which may include a credit check, voice stress analysis, and/or a polygraph), and/or be bonded.
