    Essential Job Functions

    • Inspects, monitors, and evaluates the services performed by landscape maintenance contractors in diverse outdoor environments including, but not limited to, very steep slopes under inclement weather (e.g., extreme heat, rain) where there is exposure to heavy traffic noise and wildlife such as bees, mountain lions, snakes, coyotes, deer, lizards, and rodents.
    • Prepares daily and monthly detailed inspection reports of assigned service areas.
    • Investigates and responds to citizens' complaints, problems, or inquiries regarding maintenance services.
    • Conducts detailed inspections with landscape contractors and board members of various Homeowner's Associations.
    • Reviews proposed landscape plans and maintenance plans and makes recommendations related to irrigation equipment and plant material.
    • Inspects irrigation and plant development with developers and landscape architects prior to acceptance of maintenance responsibilities.
    • Issues written orders of deficiencies to contractors and determines if monetary penalties for uncorrected deficiencies are required.
    • Uses manual or automated irrigation systems for assigned zone(s).
    • Assists in budget preparation, contract development, and cost estimate preparation for Special Districts.
    • Serves as a Department Representative on landscaping maintenance at Homeowner’s Association meetings.
    • Drives a County-issued vehicle with a current, valid driver’s license to arrive at various job sites.


    Requirements

    REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:

    Option I: One year of experience supervising grounds maintenance at the level of Grounds Maintenance Supervisor for Los Angeles County.*

    Option II: One year of experience monitoring landscape contract services for a private or public agency.**

    PHYSICAL CLASS:

    Physical Class III - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    LICENSE:

    A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions***.

    SPECIAL REQUIRMENT INFORMATION:

    *Experience at the level of Grounds Maintenance Supervisor is defined as: supervises a staff of eleven or more positions in gardening, grounds maintenance, and building custodial work.

    **Monitoring landscape contract services is defined as: managing, inspecting, administering, and/or monitoring contracts for landscape maintenance and operating practices used in commercial maintenance of irrigation systems, trees, shrubs, turf and ground cover provided by contractors.

    ***A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of filing.

    Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individual assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:
    The exam consists of TWO (2) parts weighted 100%:

    Part I: A multiple choice and/or simulation test, weighted at 70%, assessing Professional Potential, Achievement, Coping with Uncertainty, Responsibility, Working to High Quality Standards, Willingness to Learn, Working Relationships, Analyzing Information, Learning Quickly, Generating New Ideas, Using Time Efficiently, Adapting to Change, Reading Comprehension, and Deductive Reasoning.

    MULTIPLE CHOICE AND/OR SIMULATION ASSESSMENTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19 .

    Part II: A Training and Experience evaluation, weighted at 30%, assessing competencies gained in the following areas:
    • Experience managing and monitoring contracts
    • Experience using technology


    APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE REQUIREMENTS, BE WILLING AND ABLE TO PERFORM JOB-RELATED TASKS, AND ACHIEVE A COMBINED PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON PARTS I AND II OF THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

    TRANSFER OF TEST COMPONENTS :
    If you have taken identical components recently for other exams, your responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.

    TEST PREPARATION :
    We provide study guides and other test preparation resources to help candidates prepare for employment tests. While the guides may help in preparing for the test, we recommend reviewing all related materials that seem necessary.
