    Job Description

    SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Street Technician I is an entry-level position responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of the City’s Street system. This role provides support to Street Technicians and Crew Leaders and is designed to prepare incumbents for advancement within the division.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Assist in operating various trucks, vehicles, and equipment.
    • Support crews in loading, hauling, and unloading of materials.
    • Perform basic labor tasks such as cleaning, digging, lifting, and traffic control.
    • Use hand and power tools under supervision.
    • Maintain basic activity logs and safety checklists.
    • Observe safety procedures and assist with setup of work zones.
    • Perform other duties as assigned to support the Streets Division.
    • Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
    • Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.


    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    Knowledge:
    • Basic understanding of construction practices and city maintenance procedures.
    • Basic understanding of safety procedures and practices.
    • Willingness to learn the use of equipment and tools.
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
    • Basic understanding of personal computer and various software applications.


    Skill in:
    • Ability to operate heavy equipment.
    • Ability to read and understand maps, instructions and safety protocols.
    • Handling situations which require diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
    • Understanding and applying City policies and procedures.
    • Compiling data; maintaining records and files; and preparing clear and concise reports.
    • Providing efficient customer service.
    • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
    • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.


    Minimum Qualifications:
    • High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) credential.
    • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in street maintenance, construction, or a related field.


    LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
    • Class C Texas Driver’s License.


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    Work is performed primarily in an outdoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases. May be required to work in confined spaces. May be required to climb ladders. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds.

    Compensation Range

    $37,562-$56,343
