    We are searching for a team member who is:
    • Highly motivated and diligent in performing a wide-range of network-related duties, including the design, implementation, and maintenance of complex networks and leading complex network system administration projects.


    Essential Job Functions

    Performs physical and virtual server administration and network functions, including designing, configuring, installing, repairing, maintaining, and upgrading hardware and operating systems, as well as testing and optimizing complex network software and physical and cloud infrastructure.

    Designs and implements network security solutions, including system network access lists and host intrusion and prevention systems along with policy elements such as end user roles and groups, trust relationships, access rights, and directories.

    Analyzes network resource utilization and operations and resolves more complex system configuration and performance problems.

    Analyzes proposed procedures for network management, including resource allocation of centralized, decentralized, and remote network services.

    Identifies and recommends appropriate changes to network infrastructure to improve performance, reliability, and availability, and facilitate compatibility with new hardware and software.

    Plans the deployment of hardware and software upgrades for network servers, gateways, and associated telecommunication devices.

    Leads the selection, development, and implementation process for network backup and recovery solutions or the VLAN configuration process required to support the installation and maintenance of services over Internet Protocol (IP), such as audio, video, telephony, and data.

    Leads a network administration team working on system backup, configuration, procurement, and/or network security.

    Attends meetings with clients, vendors, and providers to remain apprised of project status or to gather information regarding project scope.

    Writes technical requirements for the Statements of Work for services such as installation, configuration, data center upgrades, and security assessments.

    Coordinates and works with vendors to develop and implement solutions to specific problems or to meet specific objectives.

    Participates in the analysis, evaluation, and risk assessment tasks required for implementation of new applications and system changes, such as vendor provided patches, service packs, network products, devices, and network management solutions.

    Selects, designs, implements, and configures monitoring and alerting systems for networks, servers, and systems.

    Serves as a project manager.

    Enforces network security according to policies and procedures, and documents information security processes.

    Addresses requests for service from within LASD, service providers, and outside agencies with connections to the LASD network by prioritizing the requests and addressing them or assigning them to staff to address.

    Identifies equipment and hardware needs and completes the ordering process of such equipment and hardware.

    Supervises subordinate staff by delegating work, scheduling, reviewing work, training, mentoring, disciplining, and providing direction.

    Requirements

    REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY

    OPTION I:
    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree* in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related field, -AND- four (4) years full-time paid experience** in a centralized Information Technology organization*** planning, designing, installing and maintaining complex network infrastructure with a high-availability environment.

    OPTION II:
    Five (5) years full-time paid experience** planning, designing, installing and maintaining complex network infrastructure in a centralized IT organization*** with a high-availability environment.

    LICENSE
    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS
    Physical Class III - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    *To qualify under Option I, include a copy of your official degree, official transcripts, or official letter from an accredited institution which shows the area of specialization within seven (7) calendar days from the last day of filing.     ALL APPLICANTS ARE REQUIRED TO MEET THE EDUCATION REQUIREMENT BY JUNE 13, 2025.

    **Full time paid experience is evaluated on the basis of a 40-hour work week.

    *** A centralized Information Technology organization, which is under the direction or guidance of the Chief Information Technology official for the department or major organizational unit, is responsible for providing comprehensive IT services including analysis, design, acquisition, and/or development, implementation, maintenance, or support of information systems; and in which the work performed is in direct relationship to the IT requirements and initiatives of the department or major organizational unit.

    SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
    As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be used as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT
    This examination will consist of a structured interview assessing Knowledge of advanced computer networking principles, concepts, and tools; Knowledge of network design, configuration, and administration; Knowledge of, and skill in applying, network technologies; Knowledge of, and ability to use, network infrastructure; Problem-solving skills; Leadership skills; Supervisory skills; Interpersonal skills; and Oral communication skills weighted 100%.

    APPLICANTS MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST.

    TESTING ACCOMMODATION

    VETERAN'S CREDIT
    If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran's credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. We will need a copy of your form DD214 to review, so please include that with your application or email it to sheriffexamsunit@lasd.org within seven (7) calendar days from the last day of filing.

    ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION:
    The names of applicants receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months from the date of promulgation.

    The list of successful applicants created from this exam will be used to fill vacancies within the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Technology & Support Division, Data Systems Bureau.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION

    SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS MUST COMPLETE A DETAILED BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

    ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED
    The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Department) has a "zero tolerance" policy for its employees for the following:
