    ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

    The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) is a special taxing district that operates ten branch libraries in Marin under the authority of the Board of Supervisors. It provides public library services to the residents of the unincorporated areas of the County and the cities of Corte Madera, Fairfax, and Novato.

    ABOUT THE POSITION

    The Technology Systems Specialist II (TSS II) position provides professional level support in the development, support, maintenance and training for hardware and software systems utilized within the Marin County Free Library. This position interacts with staff and occasionally with patrons to ensure that technical support is responsive and effective. Additionally, the TSS II implements the technical aspects of department moves, equipment updates and software updates. As part of the Library Technical Support Team, this position will help recommend, test and implement technologies to meet the needs of MCFL staff and patrons.

    There is currently one (1) full-time (75 hours bi-weekly), regular hire vacancy.

    Occasional weekend work and some evening hours are required to support library branches. Once the probationary period has been successfully completed, there may be an opportunity to work a hybrid schedule with some remote hours.

    ABOUT YOU

    Our Highly Qualified Candidate: The ideal candidate has knowledge of and experience providing technical support to non-technical staff remotely, in-person and via a helpdesk system. They possess an excellent understanding of:
    • Microsoft products including Windows desktop and server versions,
    • Hardware support for computers and peripheral devices, imaging computers, and securing publicly accessible computers,
    • The Faronics suite of products including Deep Freeze,
    • the Envisionware suite of products to support computer reservations and printing, wired/wireless networking installation/configuration/support, WiFi hotspot support, kiosks, self-checkout systems and support for Sierra desktop installations.

    The ideal candidate can effectively prioritize tasks, excel at verbal and written communications with staff and patrons of various diverse backgrounds when traveling among the 12 Marin County Free Library locations to provide onsite support and installation of equipment. They can effectively train end users on systems and hardware and understand how to create/update Microsoft Active Directory User accounts/groups for on-premises and the cloud.

    The ideal Marin County Free Library candidate works effectively both independently and in a team environment; recognizes and respects cultural differences; has a firm commitment to addressing social equity issues and improving the education outcomes for children; is passionate and enthusiastic about library services; and recognizes that the library is a place where information transforms lives. Experience working in underserved communities is highly desirable.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    KNOWLEDGE OF:
    • Techniques, equipment and diagnostic software used in the assembly, troubleshooting and repair of personal computers.
    • Standard desktop software.
    • Network and desktop operating systems.
    • Desktop software integration.
    • Internet protocols and services such as WWW, FTP, NNTP, DNS, SMTP or others.
    • Programming languages for the personal computer such as Access, Visual Basic or others.
    • Techniques for explaining technical concepts to non-technical users.

    ABILITY TO:
    • Assemble, install, configure, repair and maintain computer hardware, peripherals and components.
    • Diagnose and resolve software application problems for desktops and networks and interface systems.
    • Install, configure, modify and maintain applicable operating systems, applications, networks, and specialized software.
    • Provide training, assist users in problem resolution and explain system and application use.
    • Analyze plans, processes or programs and provide verification and reconciliation of specialized departmental systems, computer programs or system processes.
    • Maintain current technical knowledge of the field including learning new and existing software, applications, databases and hardware through formal, informal and on-the-job training and self study.
    • Organize own work, setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Any four-year combination of recent professional experience and relevant computer science coursework that demonstrates the necessary knowledge and abilities. A typical way of achieving these requirements would be completion of two years of college level or technical training in computer science or a closely related field and two years of performing network and/or personal computer user support.

    Experience in PC repair, network administration, application and software troubleshooting, computer operations, or a substantially similar field may be substituted for the college requirement on a year for year basis.
