What You'll Be DoingThe Wake County Housing Affordability and Community Revitalization Department is seeking a strategic and analytical intern to support the tracking, research, and evaluation of housing-related policies and programs. The ideal candidate is a policy-savvy professional with a passion for affordable housing, strong research skills, and a commitment to serving diverse communities.
In this role, you will gain valuable experience in operations and program administration within the Wake County Housing Affordability and Community Revitalization Department that works to ensure that quality, affordable housing is available for all Wake County residents.
This position offers hands-on experience:
- Research, analyze, and interpret local, state, and federal housing policies, legislation, and regulations
- Develop policy recommendations to address affordable housing challenges, tenant protections, homelessness, zoning, and land use
- Monitor housing trends, demographic data, and market conditions to inform policy development
- Prepare comprehensive policy reports, briefing materials, and presentations for senior leadership and the public
- Evaluate the effectiveness of housing programs and initiatives using qualitative and quantitative methods
- Stay informed about emerging housing policy issues and best practices from other jurisdictions

As the population and economy continue to grow in Wake County, the need for affordable housing development and preservation increases. Not only do more units of affordable housing need to be built, housing services must be provided to support families and individuals to access or maintain safe, decent, affordable housing. Affordable housing is also critical to preserving Wake County’s economic competitiveness by offering housing for workers at all income levels, supporting housing stability and economic opportunity for its residents, and furthering Wake County’s commitment to healthy and inclusive growth. The Department’s programs include Community Revitalization, Development Financing, Rental Assistance, Homeless Services, Community Outreach, Emergency Shelter, and Permanent Supportive Housing.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and public presentation
- Proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, GIS, statistical software) and policy research methods
