    What You'll Be Doing

    Wake County’s Maternal and Child Health (MCH) team is seeking a compassionate and professional Medical Interpreter (Fluent in English and Spanish) to aid mothers and families seeking our services. The primary responsibility of the Interpreter role is to provide Spanish interpreting services for patients with limited or no English proficiency who are receiving preventive health care within our Maternal and Child Health (MCH) section. The successful candidate will be expected to interpret from English to Spanish, and Spanish to English and be proficient in medical interpretation. To excel in this role you must demonstrate the same warmth and understanding towards clients that our MCH team provides daily to all needing our help.     Responsibilities Include:
    • Provide interpretation in person for the Maternal Health nurses/case managers during home visits, assist in interpretation for community events, interpret for telephonic visits, and schedule calls
    • Provide supplemental support and coverage to human services clinics as needed
    • Interpret for health care professionals in the delivery of medical, social support services and outreach services to Spanish-speaking clients
    • Ability to obtain interpreter certification within 1 year of hire
    • Drive to and interpret for the Maternal and Child Health staff on home visits
    • Perform interpreting assistance in person and by phone as needed for other MCH staff and the clients/ patients
    • Provided interpreting assistance to the clinics in-person, when available
    • Collaborate with MCH community outreach events as needed by providing interpreting assistance
    • Perform administrative tasks to document work performed and productivity on a daily basis, during downtime
    • Maintain a high level of communication and transparency that allows a positive workflow and coordination of duties and assignments

    The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

    • High school diploma or GED
    • Fluency in English and interpreting skills in a specific foreign language
    • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

    Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

    • Interpreter certification/course completion

    • Excellent knowledge and understanding of medical terminology in English and Spanish, as well as a good understanding of everyday language and different slangs in Spanish
    • Knowledgeable and compliant with the interpreter’s code of ethics that include confidentiality and privacy of the client’s information

    Emergency Service Worker Statement
