    Introduction

    Performs skilled work in all phases of large residential, commercial, and high profile projects to secure compliance with International Building codes, Inspection Services, Ordinances, Survey, Zoning Codes and Stipulations.

    Applicants who do not meet all the minimum requirements for the Building Inspector II position may be considered for an underfill as a Building Inspector I, depending on applicant qualifications. If the position is underfilled, the salary offered would be commensurate with the lower level classification. The minimum requirements and salary range for the underfill position are listed below in the minimum qualification section .

    Anticipated starting salary for this position may be up to mid-point depending on candidate’s experience and internal equity. Although the full salary range is listed above, the salary range to midpoint for each position is listed below.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Building Inspector I (underfill) Minimum Qualifications
    $29.86 - $34.88 per hour
    Education and Experience
    • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent.
    • Work experience equivalent to two years construction work in one of the four major trades: Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical, or Building Construction or a related field of inspection.
    • One year building inspection experience.
    • An equivalent combination of construction experience may substitute for the inspection experience requirement.
    Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
    • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
    • Obtain one International Code Council / International conference of building Officials (ICC/ICBO) Certification in one of the four disciplines: Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical, or Building within six months of hire.
    • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
    Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on department/section assignment.

    Building Inspector II Minimum Qualifications
    $32.72 - $38.45 per hour
    Education and Experience
    • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED)equivalent.
    • Three years construction work in one of the four major trades: plumbing, electrical, mechanical, or building construction or a related field of inspection.
    • Two years' inspection experience.
    • An equivalent combination of construction experience may substitute for the inspection experience requirement.
    Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements

    Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on department/section assignment. i.e. OSHA Certification, Barricade Certification, Trench Certification.

    Essential Functions

    Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:
    • Operates a city vehicle to respond to customer inquiries at job sites.
    • Inspects industrial and commercial buildings, larger single family and multi-family dwellings, townhouses, apartments, Natural Area Open Space (NAOS) areas, to ensure compliance with all relevant municipal codes.
    • Approves work conforming to regulations; detects code violations and re-inspects to determine compliance.
    • Performs specialized inspections at regular intervals to determine compliance with the municipal codes.
    • Investigates complaints regarding unauthorized work in progress without proper permits, determines appropriate action and follows through for compliance.
    • Provides quality customer service.
    • Ensures the contractor/developer completes the project as designed.


    Work Environment/Physical Demands

    • Travel to/from meetings and various site inspections locations.
    • Exposure to environmental conditions including dirt, temperature extremes, unsafe structures, heights, etc.
    • Reach, grip and move debris to gain access to or expose construction for inspection.
    • Work typically involves some combination of bending, stooping, lifting arms above head, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (50 pounds).
    • Walk across trenches and dirt piles.
    • Climb ladders, stairs and scaffolding to perform inspections.
    • Detect hazardous situations on construction sites.
    • Distinguish the full range of the color spectrum in order to verify compliance with applicable electrical and other building material color codes.
