    Job Description

    SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs a variety of general, technical and specialized maintenance tasks related to pools and associated facilities.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Works directly with Aquatics Manager to oversee all pool maintenance and chemical activity.
    • Identifies, repairs, and maintains public swimming pools, water systems, filter systems, and pumps.
    • Maintains the proper chemical balance for the pool.
    • Maintains the pH and chlorine values for good water quality.
    • Maintains the pool pumps and filters.
    • Maintains the pool area including cleaning of the deck and other maintenance tasks.
    • Responds to swimming pool related work orders in a timely, friendly, and efficient manner to assess and repair non-functioning machinery or equipment.
    • Repairs and maintains electrical and mechanical equipment.
    • Transports and stores hazardous chemicals.
    • Carries out scheduled water cleaning, using chemicals like chlorine.
    • Regularly tests swimming pool water quality and pH balance.
    • Tests the chemical levels in public swimming pools and other water systems and adjusts as needed.
    • Maintains manual or automated records of all activities and prepares daily / weekly / monthly reports.
    • Picks up trash and cleans public swimming pools, restrooms and facility areas.
    • Operates and inspects tools and equipment and makes minor adjustments and repairs.
    • Operates vehicles to transport various types of materials and equipment.
    • Cleans and services swimming pool filtration units.
    • Services heating, circulation, and de-humidifier systems.
    • Uses swimming pool vacuum cleaners and brushes to clean the pool floor.
    • Checks and repairs corrosion, cracks, and leaks in the pool walls or floors.
    • Uses a telescopic pole with net to clean and remove any leaf’s or derbies.
    • Makes sure equipment like pool covers, diving blocks, and slides are in good working order.
    • Installs and repairs irrigation system at the pool facility.
    • Logs and reports equipment faults or water quality problems to managers.
    • Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
    • Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.


    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    Knowledge:
    • The rules, regulations, policies, and operating procedures of City Aquatics programs.
    • Proper swimming pool cleaning methods and techniques and use of swimming pool chemicals.
    • Policies, rules, and regulations governing the conduct and safety of public recreation, and aquatic programs.
    • Swimming pool safety rules and regulations.
    • Swimming pool maintenance, operations, and safety rules and regulations.
    • Traffic control methods and procedures.
    • Business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications.


    Skill in:
    • Handling situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
    • Understanding and applying City policies and procedures.
    • Promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
    • Acting quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
    • Interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
    • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and general public.
    • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    High School diploma or equivalent; AND two years of experience in pool maintenance and repair; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certified Pool Operator preferred.

    LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

    Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    Work is performed both in an indoor or outdoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm and hazardous chemicals. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 90 pounds.
